I recently bought a 06 summit 800 (no electric start BTW) The previous owner put Protaper aluminum bars on it. The handwarmers that were on it were burnt out (tested with an ohm meter) so I bought a pair of RSI hi-powered grip heater elements and put them on. They barely work on high and are basically cold on low. I called RSI (great guys BTW) and they said to check the voltage to the warmers. I tested and I get about 11.5 volts at idle and 12.1 at 5000 rpm.
I get the same readings at the accessory plug under the console so I know it's not a poor connection to the handwarmers.
I think I should have closer to 14 volts at 5000 rpm but I don't know for sure.
I have a factory service manual for the sled but it doesn't give a spec for
charging system voltage. For what it's worth, the lights work great and the factory thumbwarmer on the sled gets good and hot. Is it possible that I have a weak stator or faulty voltage regulator. How do I test them? The only tests in the manual are ones that You do if the sled won't start.
