what oil to use? and battery? new to snowbiking

I just picked up a 2009 WR450 with Explorer kit, this winter will be my first snowbiking experience. I was wondering about using a lighter oil for the winter? and if so what are you using?
Also the battery is shot wondering what is recommended?higher capacity? the bike has grip heaters as well.
while I'm asking questions, looking for some handguards. any suggestions.

Thank you for your time

Yamalube full synthetic. (Gray bottle) It's actually some of the best oil out there. The shear stability is high enough to run in all seasons.

Rotella T 5-40, as for hand guards ,Fastway makes a nice set, they have mounts that tie into your handle bar clamps very strong!

Absolutely do not run 5-40 rotella or any other atoumotive oils. Yamaha motorcyles share the same oil in the crank, trans, and clutches. You would glaze your clutches in one ride. KTM and Honda's have seperate oil for the trans-clutches and crank case. If all else fails, there is an oil temperature chart in your owners manual.

Unfortunately this is wrong.

Rotella T is wet clutch certified, is used by professional racing organizations (yes, it is true), is recommended by Rekluse themselves for use in EVERY clutch environment they support, comes from probably the best feed stock known to man, and has some of the best anti-shear qualities on the market. This oil is used in turbo diesels with bearings doing 30,000 RPM. It's perfectly safe for dirt bikes and I have logged over 200 hours on Rotella T 5w-40 personally. If you stick to your oil change intervals (every 8 hours or so) you will be just fine. I have researched this topic so much it will make your head spin and I have made my choice and I'll stick by it until a major formula change comes about.

Use it. Love it. Save some money over that over-priced crap they sell at the dealer. Oil is one of those things you just can't change some people's mind on. It's like Chevy vs. Ford vs. Dodge.....

Shell Rotella T 5W-40. KTM 500 with rekluse used it all last season and also for dirt this summer.

Thanks to all for the replies and information, I can't wait to try this thing out! If it all works out hopefully next year I can put a mountain horse kit on it!

I also researched this topic extensively and agree with everything Rush44 says. Have used Rotella 5w-40 oil for two years with no complaints.

As for the battery..I run a 2009 KTM 450 SXF which has no kickstarter. I replaced the lead acid battery with a Ballistic battery...half the weight and twice the cca's as the stocker, awesome battery. Its so light I carry an extra just in case.

I stand corrected. I didn't know it was wet clutch safe. I need to do some more research I guess. I'll still stick to the manufacturer's recommendation, although I do use Rotella 5 40 in my duramaxes.

I used Rotella Products on my yz250f which was bored and stroked to a 315... 220 hours on the first rebuild and 215 on the 2nd.... Everything looked great...it is all I use...

If the bike is stored outside I would not recommend a lithium based battery. You will regret it. They don't crank when cold and the idea that they "warm up" as you crank them just doesn't work in the winter temps. If you store the bike in the garage and don't spend the night anywhere then you would probably be fine with a lithium battery.

I bought a gel battery for winter use.

The bike will be kept outside and also Probably an overnight camping trip aswell. Thank you for the info. Any particular brand you went with or have had good luck with?

This is interesting, I was planning on using the yamalube non synthetic since I will be changing oil pretty much every ride. Is the rotella priced comparably? I was also wondering about the gas in the oil problem, since I have the 2013 fi wr450 if I got the Yamaha programmer could I avoid those problems?

Oil

My paperwork from Rekluse recommended Rotella T 15-40, which is what I have been running in my 2012 Yamaha WR 450f. The only Rotella 5-40 I can find is the full synthetic Rotella T6. So all of you running Rotella 5-40 - are you using the full synthetic T6?

Rotella Synthetic T6 is okay for your Rekluse. Same JASO MA approval with cold temp benefits.
