What oil do you use?

Easy question. What oil do you use in your 4 stroke sled and what weight.

I run 0W-30 in both of our 4 strokes but came to the realization recently that over $8 a quart from the local yamaha shop is rediculious.
I remember when I rode sportbikes that we would run mobil 1 instead of honda oil just because of the cost difference.

Looking for a cheaper alternative. Is there one?

I personally run 0-40 Mobil 1 (cheaper). A lot of guys i ride with run 5-30 Mobil 1 (cheapest) as well. Other guys i know run the Motul 0-40 Snow Power (expensive). Some run the Yamaha 0-30 (Most expensive) as well. Its all a game LOL ! And a scam !

Since some of the guys you ride with run 5W-30 where are you riding and what temperatures. We regularly ride well below freezing and at time below zero.

I read somewhere that when all oils of the same weight are up to operating temperature that they are all the same. So running 0W versus 5W would be slim. Guess it makes since to save a ton of money and run 5W-30 over 0W-30.

And yes oil is one of the biggest scams. I just can't justify running Yamaha oil anymore.

I'd run Esso XD3 0W40 or Mobil 0W40 Synthetic. 40W oils give better viscosity break down protection at high temperatures. The Yamaha Synthetic is almost $20/liter here :face-icon-small-sho

Oils

Just run Amsoil or Lucas 0W-40 and change your oil every 5000 kms or 3000 miles. With a good synthetic you don't need to change your oil on a seasonal schedule. I don't change my oil for up to 3 seasons depending on my riding total. With a conventional or semi-syn the carbon breaks down over the summer periods and can actually corrode (pit) your bearings and journals but a good 100% syn oil, you can rest assure the oil still holds it quality for a long, long time. A good synthetic is your cheapest insurance for a longer life and cooler running motor. Garunteed!!!

I run Amsoil Synthetic 0-40W. I buy a case at a time direct from Amsoil for $116 and use it in my Yamaha dirtbike as well. Case lasts me about two years or so. Usually I change oil about every 500-1000 miles depending on how busy (err lazy) I am during the season. Really it's the WR450 that likes to drink it up, sled is usually pretty happy with a few quarts a season.
