What makes the team tied secondary clutch better?

The two sheaves do not rotate in relation to one another like in a Team TSS clutch.

This equates to less "scrubbing" of the belt and different character of the clutching.

There are some out there that don't like the tied design, but...IMO... I believe that that relates to how much actual research, testing, etc that was done on the setup for the particular sled it was fitted to. I have had great luck with this clutch and feel that it backshifts much better and keeps the RPM more constant.

A properly working secondary is only as good as the ENTIRE clutching setup...They all need to work together in synchronicity in order for true performance gains to be realized... often they are made worse. Final gearing, altitude, Primary clutch setup, belts, alignment, helix, springs in both clutches, condition of the clutches and weight used in the primary make all the difference.. and if they are "off" you will not have a good running sled.

If you are getting one... don't mix-n-match others setups... run what the seller is packaging and go with it... Do your research on this topic... There are many people that have put time into this setup, Team Industries, RK Tech, Indy Specialites, and Roosterbuilt to name a few. They all have their "special blend", so talk to them before the rush of the season starts and get the setup that's right for you.

I've run the tied in my sleds and will be running it again.

I have the Indy Specialties tied setup in my SBA. Dan balanced the primary as well. Very smooth up and back shift. I've run it since new so I have no performance comparison. It's definately faster than any other stock 800 in my riding group.

switchman- I have a 2012 SBA and I am debating on taking my clutches to Indy Dan to have this done. Do you this set up out west as well? If you did, did Dan give you the set up for out west as well? I have the 2 inch track on mine. Thanks

Just give Dan a call. He's a great guy to talk to. If you ride at diffrent altitudes he'll set you up with what you need. He does lots of testing and has his setups nailed down. I only have his setup for here in Wisconsin. I'll be going back to him for clutching/gearing setup for running a 146" 2.5" CamoX out west. Indy Specialties will get all of my buisness !

I like the fact that the backshift is so smooth as well. Supposedly cooler and holds RPM's better. But how do you prove that? It's so hard to have a test environment with two sleds doing the exact same thing - one with the Tied and the other with the TSS04. Anyway, I agree with Eric. I'll be running mine again. Biggest problem is now I have to buy more helixs'.

I have had the tied on my last two sleds. I really like it as if set up right does run much cooler temps. I also have indy dan's clutch get in my sba with 146" x 2.5 camo, and I don't care what it is, it flat out works. He did both cluthes and the run awesome. I hold rpms so much better then a nicely setup tss04, and the upshift and backshift is so smooth. Most of my riding has been in the mountains with this setup and I will continue to run the tied on my stuff.

That's good to hear, I'm going to be running the 146" x 2.5" this winter too. He nailed my flatland setup. Do you have any other performance work done by Dan or others.

Wrenched on a brand new polaris scrambler 850 today, found that the secondary is using a Tied desgin, atleast it looked like it!

Is this a new feature or am I way off?

Maybe polaris will incorporate them in the snow segment also?!:D

Just IMO but, a good clutch set-up is a good clutch set-up and the Tied won't be any better in a straight short pull to any other good set-up.

Where the Tied shines is the other parts of clutching; temp. (belt life), traction (backshift and part throttle upshift), and "feel".

For me , it has allowed the return to lighter side-loading springs (closer to the old tortional clutches that disappeared because of electronic reverse) and still have awesome backshift. The sliding sheave on the Tied does not need to fight back against the rotation of the belt to backshift so it needs less help from the helix and spring compared to the twist style.
With less side-load requirements from the spring, the off throttle cooling (like the old stuff) comes back and low throttle traction reminds you off the old Phazer you need to have in the garage for your new girlfriend lol. That's the feel part I like from the Tied. Saves me lots of times when I go "oops, shouldn't of tried to go here" lol.
The other benefit that the easier shifting secondary has shown to me is the primary needs to work less. This has allowed me to get rid of the heavy heal weights-heavy primary spring set-up that has become so popular on mountain sleds since the introduction of the compression spring secondary.

My set-up with the Tied is very different then most recommendations. But my belt is very happy, my engine puts more to the track not having to fight to friction losses that come with heavy springs, weights and shallow helix's, and for some reason I burn way less fuel than my buds on a ride even though I usually break trail.

The Tied is the easiest backshifting and upshifting secondary since the Cat tortional reverse secondary. I believe for the mountains this clutch is just starting to be explored and the correct helix's and springs will come.
I`ve only got a couple of seasons on the Tied (two different sleds too) and it's not quite dialed on the Pro. Because of the finite selection of springs I'm at the point I need a custom helix to get the bit of extra squeeze I need at full throttle as I approach 1 to 1 and into OD. Backshift is still a little late there as the load increases in deep snow. Stiffer spring cures this area but then I lose the benefits and trackspeed of the lighter set-up.

There is one thing that I wish Team would address. The weight. On the QD Pro the extra spinning mass is quite noticeable (not so much on the PC I had before).
If Team could take off a lb. with some "racing" version or whatever and add adjustability with spring preload from the outside it would be perfection IMO. Even better than the old standard, the Cat reverse tortional.

Geo,

I think you summed it up pretty well, I tried many different spring/helix combo's and one set up seemed to take from up shift and give a little more on the back shift. Then using a different setup it was exactly opposite. Never could find a happy medium.

I did like the clutch but right now imo the tss 04 seems be a little bit better for the mountains. I am sure someone will find the perfect combo with spring/helix on the tied and it will be much better

From what i understand the UTV/ATV's have been using a TIED varient for a few years now, not sure why it hasn't been put in the sleds as std equipment yet.
