What is causing The belt problems????

Now i ride AC but i have been wondering ever since the XP's came out and when I herd about the belt and drive shaft problems I have always wonderd what causes them. And is it only on the Mountain version or is all XP's (short track, and renigade). Not bashing and deffinatly not starting an argument, but just wondering.:confused:
 
The belt issues were caused by 2 things....POOR calibration and/or alignment being off.
Mostly the calibration. My riding buddy got a 163XP and just looking at the settup a guy that has tuned alot of TRA's could tell it would be a belt cooker. He changed his settup before he ever rode it and has not had a single belt problem. On the XP they went to a stiffer primary spring (less belt clamp), a steeper ramp (less belt clamp), lighter pin weight (les belt clamp), taller gearing and bigger drivers (more load on the clutches). this all adds up to alot of HEAT! Just throwing more pin weight and dropping the gearing would cure a large potion of the problems....instead they went with a different belt that is thicker and wider so there is more surface area for the sheaves to grip.....IMHO a shortcut fix, plus they can charge more for a belt.
just putting the '07 ramps, gearing down and adding pin weight will allow a guy to run the cheaper 166 and have no problems....with good alignment of course.
then there is the TRA wear issue....there is still no cure for this!

Because after these "small" problems and the other "small" problems are "fixed" the sled performs "good" for a "stock" sled.
 
I was checking out the doo site yesterday.
They had an add up stating they had worked out all the bugs.

I'm confused.
I thought according to Doo there was nothing wrong with the XP, so how could there be bugs to work out?

Oh yah! I forgot. There are "NO PROBLEMS" with XP, its the "BEST SLED EVER". Those ones that I've seen limping around are just the rider not riding the sled correctly.

I am thinking about buying a slightly used/leftover 2008 before next winter. Leaning towards a Dragon 800 154" right now, might consider a Doo. I do not trust my dealer after seeing some of the work that he has done so I'd pretty much be on my own as far as fixing issues/tuning goes. Besides help from the SW forum of course. :D

The alignment is not an easy fix. I put a different primary (4 lbs lighter than a TRA) on my longtracked TNT MOD and took all my motor mounts off and slotted them on my Bridgeport plus had to cut the taper in the clutch deeper. If you only need say 30 to 150 thou of movement a guy on Dootalk will be marketing a washer shim kit that should be real slick and easy to finally make the secondary movable. Doo engineering from what I here is denying all of this and saying the new 377 belt fixes all!!! I made a couple of Big John style torque arms for a friends 163 and 154. This torque arm goes between the jackshaft tower and the front suspension shock tower. This brace along with a 44/33 Dalton helix stopped his belts from coming apart on a one week trip to Colorado's deep powder at 10 to 12 thousand feet. He still has some work to do on his primary to get that a bit better but at least the belt deal has been improved greatly if not cured.

I love my 450 lb total wet longtracked TNT and put a ton of work into it and wouldn't give it up for anything, but some of the stuff doo engineering tries to stuff down our throats is total Lunacy!!! This sled is almost the lightest sled I have ever owned, Only one ever lighter was in the mid 70's a Scorpion 440 Sting at 360 lbs. But the T has suspension, track, 10.5 gallon gas tank and very reliable 115 HP!!! and after its first trip the fuel mileage looks so good that no matter who I ride with I will never need to pack a gas can, Cat 800 injected used 9 gallons and I only used 5.3 gallons and it was still jetted so rich on the bottom and mid yet that it fouled a set of plugs.

The 800's can be fixed without spending a ton of money if you know exactly what to do. I think the best place to find that info for a XP is over on DooTalk on the XP mtn section. Not quite as much info to be found consistently on Snowest without guys like Hammer, TurboAl, IndyDan etc although WinterBrew above gives good info out. I sure hope some replacements can fill in for those guys to bring this forum back to the level it used to be, have learned tons on here in the past!!!
