What happens when Rx1 motors run out of oil?

I need to tear into it but i am not very motivated, and just curious if there is some sort of common failure on these things. i just yanked it out and its been sitting waiting for love, but not much has come its way.

here is the story of this year(before failure)

accidentally over torqued cam gears after new head gasket(removing head shim)
warming it up and revved it up, cam chain skipped and smoked almost every valve.
new valves boom good, back in action and running again.
a few short rides(other issues with sled)
out riding and sled was running good on the trail in, then starts to sound like an exhaust leak getting louder, by this i mean an audible ticking, what i know as blown out header gasket(i have a custom thick one to accomodate warped flange) well slow down to inspect, and motor just stalls once i let off the throttle. pull hood, and clutch wont spin over by hand, locked up good. when i pull it apart, she was almost out of oil.( i had topped off at the begining of the ride)

any guesses on what went down? more or less looking for opinions as i still dont care to take it apart.
 
Was the oil tank still full or over full, maybe your oil pump packed it in? A buddy of mine has a complete Rx1 motor in pieces I'm sure he'd sell, far as I can see its in decent shape, just needs to be assembled. It came with a parts sled he bought.

My oil filter came loose when my went down. It ruined the crank and three rods. The cranks are not turnable either. They don't make undersize bearings for it.

Consider your self lucky. Sounds like a seized rod bearing. Just replace rod/crank/rod and main bearings. Lucky as in you didn't send a rod out the back of your block which inevitably destroys your whole motor leaving only nuts and bolts reusable.

lol zeb honestly, the thing keeps getting pushed closer to the scrap pile in the corner of the shop. althought i do miss the power!!

no when i took it apart, i think maybe a cup of oil came out.

The oil could be in the crankcase if the pump was not pumping it back to the tank. Did you drain the oil from the engine?
 
Just a story for you, I removed my engine and took it to the dealer to replace a water pump gasket for me because I was too busy, well they never removed the oil pan and when they slide the water pump out the gear and chain that turns the oil pump disconnected and fell into the oil pan. They simply put the shaft back in and buttoned up the engine. I get it all installed, fire it up and check for oil circulation and nothing. I think I need to bleed, try a million ways to do that. In the end I removed the motor and pulled the oil pan and sure enough I figured out what was going on.

I ended up running the motor for about 8 times at less then 30 sec a time on the stand never under load and never over 5500 rpm. I took out the head, and 2 main bearings, and rings were useable but burned a little oil after that.

Bottom line they dont take well to no oil. Good luck
 
seized my vec at idle middle rod bearing toast + piston & rod,there is a tiny little drain in the bottom of the case came lose slowly lost pressure. funny started to tick just a little bit so i stoped & it stalled:eek:would not turn over done like dinner.:face-icon-small-sad
