What fuel to run?? on boost

I'm running Trick 110 straight 2,500'-9,000'. I know there is a lot of people that run "Av gas" which I assume you are referring to LL. I was told by my fuel guy this this is not good fuel to run through a 2 stroke that runs at high RPM. The fuel is designed for a lower RPM airplane engine and isn't designed for the constant throttle chopping that you do while riding a sled. I get the Trick 110 for $7.50 a gallon.

I run straight av. the av gas picked up at the airport has to adhere to strict policies and regular testing. I always get told what the octane level is at time of purchase and usually around 104. many times its higher. with race fuel you have to trust who your buying from as there is no strict testing structure after it leaves the producer and if its been sitting for a while your 110 octane may not be actually 110. also many companies like vp for example call there fuel c12 or 111 but its just a name and not there actual claimed octane. not against race fuel at all I just think its important to know.

The Av gas burns hotter than your typical race fuels which in theory is going to wear the engine out sooner. As for the gas sitting a long time being there isn't the additives in race gas as pump gas the stuff has an amazing long shelf life.

Old folklore!

I've been using 100LL(low lead) aka "AvGas" since '03 in my turbo. Never had a QC problem with it! I've tried 110 straight, it just doesn't have the throttle response Avgas does. You would be better off blending it with 91...

I have a skidoo turbo, it hands down runs the best and most consistant with av gas, I've tried 110 and blending it all sorts of combos. its more $ and doesn't run as good, I ask the guys at the airport they say it will vary in octane, but has to be above 100 to meet their standards

Are most of you that run avgas (100ll) running it straight or blending for elevation and boost? this is my first sled on boost.

All octane requirements depend on boost level and altitude. I've been running straight 100LL for 6-7 years on a boosted Apex at 18lbs boost, a boosted Pro at 12 lbs and now an XM on 10 lbs. All at elevations from 6500-10,500 ft. The av gas BS going around that it is for "low rpm motors", "too dry", or whatever is just that.. BS! You can talk all you want about how it's not going to work, but there are 100's of us out there using it day in and day out with great results. You just can't argue with experience.

To answer you question more specifically I would have to know your typical riding elevation. I would be giving you an educated guess since I haven't put any miles on the xm yet, but if you are at 7500 ft or above I would think 2-3 gallons of 100LL on 7lbs of boost should easily be enough octane, just as Wheel House said.

Thanks for the info. avgas it is will try that 2-3 gallon per tank. hoping to test at Thanksgiving.

This is even worse than the guy telling people they have to use Doo oil or they'll lose their warranty.

#1, Avgas is rated based upon a different standard in two ways: it's calculated as MON, compared to vehicular fuel being calculated at ron+mon/2 which means in reality that 100LL is more like 103.

#2, "Burning hotter" doesn't "wear out your motor sooner", it either creates pre-detonation, or it doens't. Those of us (THOUSANDS OF TURBO USERS) who have tested av vs RG know darn well that this is BS. The fact that it's actually higher octane than stated is EXACTLY the opposite of that.

#3, the 100 figure is a "low" figure, as it's intended to be able to sit for long periods & maintain it's properties.... much more important to keep planes in the sky than make a car go fast.

If you're going to search for "facts" about av gas, make sure you're not getting them from someone who stands to gain from feeding you misinformation. Both posts are 100% incorrect, and the thousands of guys running av every day prove this point. My last 7000+ miles have been spent at 11-14 psi mixing 50% av or 25-30% Sunoco 112 and hitting det at the same point off 50% av as 30% RG... do the math, this clearly points to the 100 not being inferior, actually, quite to the contrary.

You WANT hotter btw, running say 110 in a motor that needs 98 to avoid det give poor throttle response, and a lazy bottom end. As mentioned above, run the lowest amount of octane you can to avoid det.

I was just researching an article, and Both Boondocker's Jared Sessions and TSS Brandon Micku absolutely love Av gas.
1. Very very high standards must be maintained because of the aviation application
2. Jared told me independent testing put Av Gas around 104
3. It's super available, and has a good shelf life.

Crazy talk Trish... crazy talk :D

Someone needs a new fuel guy.....

Been running it for over 10 years in sleds, all applications, absolutely no issues.

I love reading all about what people figure about av gas. like reading it burns hotter. Around here everybody thinks it actually burns COLDER so your loosing power with it vs running av gas.

nothing wrong with running av gas. its alot cheaper and more affordable as to race gas thats a big for sure!

Whether it actually runs hotter or colder. You will tune for that with your fuel controller

Av Gas

Take 100 % av gas add 10% Methyl hydrate, 7% acetone
Race gas! Have to use right away and will not stick together.
Not great for 2 stroke with oil not mixing right but this was many years ago.

Your fuel guy is wanting to sell you fuel, sorry his sales line is BS, and was told to him by the guy he gets fuel from. AV is +100 ron and 108 mon, close to vp 111 or trick 110 but way more regulated and stable.
