What do I use to seal joints on pipes

Putting my pipe back on and need to know what if anything do you guys use to seal the exhaust joints? Also on the exhaust gaskets do I need to put anything on them or just install the gasket with no silicone? I was reading on the slp website to make sure to make sure the pipes are sealed to avoid hp loss.

I use the Copper color (high temp) gasket sealer, cant remember the exact brand. Any automotive store will have it. I seal all joints between between exhaust components and will give the exhaust manifold gaskets a thin coat. Makes for a nice tight exhaust system with no leaks.

I ended up using the ultra black silicone. Put everything back together and still notice some smoke coming from the manifold. I tried cheating and using the old gaskets, I thought if I put a little silicone on them it would work.

I used red color high temp gasket maker, bought at auto parts store and have had no leaks.

So I recieved top end gasket kit today and had a few questions. First of the exhaust gaskets (4) have two sides, which one goes where or does it matter. What I mean is one side of the gasket is different then the other. Also it came with some O rings that are the same size of exhaust ports, not sure if those are for the exhaust gaskets or something else. Sorry I just don't have any reference of manuals or online diagrams for this old of a motor.
