WHAT DID I DO!!!

Hey guys,

I need some input on where to go now. I got back from a ride with the kids and left the 900 outside, an hour later I went to put it in the garage. I started it up let it warm for a few then jumped on gace it a good shot. She done here normal skis up then I lost power, it ran rough just got it to the garage nursing her here ( about 100ft ). Once in there I could really hear some terrible nosie coming from under the hood. I poped it up and it sounds like its mag side. It sounds to me like there is something clanging around inside something. She is misfireing spurtting just plain sickly. Wheres the first place to look???

try checking your compression. If you don't have a compression gauge then pull the exhaust off and look into the y-pipe with a flashlight. Turn the clutch to get a good look. This should give a quick view of things.

Sounds like your flywheel possibly just came apart on you. If it did it would short the stator.

Pull the plugs and try to look in at the pistons to see if there is any visible damage. You probably can not see much but if something bad happened you might.

Next take a compression check on both cylinders. If they test fairly even you probably didn't lose a piston. If the mag side has no compression then you got problems inside.

If compression is good pull the flywheel and see if she came apart.

Don't run the engine till you figure it out because you could make things a whole lot worse.

some more info, when i got it in the garage i shut it down looked over the engine compartment for anything loose or apart. When I didnt see anything out of the ordinary I pulled her over again. She fired back up but with the same issues. All electrical power seems fine.

After I eat I will head back out and check the compression.

Just to let you all know she is bone stock 05 RMK 900 dealer says all updates are done the only mod done was the throttle/oil cable replaced with the one piece cable

most likely your flywheel is coming apart and the more you run it the more chance you have of it taking out your stator if it hasn't already damaged it.

Just curious, how many miles do you have on it? I have the same sled.

Babbitts Has the updated flywheel for the cheapest price I have found.

4012589 FLYWHEEL-KOK,V7,CRIMPED $313.67

4011463 STATOR-KOK 866 $218.87

Maybe, right up till she runs long enough for the metal piece that comes off to destroy your stator.

:face-icon-small-sad lets hope that doesnt happen.

Trying to find my compression tester now, will up date once I do. Funny how you can never find anything when you need it, i guess a recent move doesnt help either.....:face-icon-small-dis

here are a couple photos of the ring.

Update

Ok I cant find my compression tester anywhere, ill have to wait until Monday to get to a repair shop to get one.

Sooo, here is when things get iffy, I pulled off the Y pipe to have a look in there. the pistons show a little wear but it dont seem that bad to me, looks like normal wear for the age of the machine. The thing that worries me is the little round balls that come out the y pipe on the mag side. To me it looks like some opened one of those moisture bags and poured out the stuff into my cylinder. But the little balls in there are aluminum.:mad2: I guess an engine tear down is next:face-icon-small-dis

Since this happened some things came back to me, 2 days ago when i took her out she was running rough, first time this year so i replaced the plugs and she cleared up, and ran smooth again. Now yesterday when I had her out at idle the lights on the guages seemed to flicker at idle and the blue hi-beam indicator light was coming and going when the setting was in low beam. when you rev'ed it up all was fine. Not sure if this was warning signs of the now engine failure.

Aluminum balls coming out of the mag side means, don't even bother doing a compression test and do not run it anymore. Just pull the engine and open it up to see what happened. :face-icon-small-fro

Just my luck!!!! Not bad for the first day of 2011, i guess I know what kind of year im going to have. On another note can you drop in another size engine, would they fit or would it be a modding nightmare? Where I am it might be cheaper for me to buy a new crate engine

you can drop in another 05 900 or you can drop in an 05 700 and flash the ECU. Or you can modify to try and put anything else in.

Ok Guys, with the engine tear down looming in the next couple of days, now is the time to do some upgrades. So let me have it, what are a must do to the engine. She is a stock 05 900. The only thing I have done is FBF oil cable.

Also what should I really take note to, not do or must do when I tear down and rebuild.

If you want to do it right, either get the updated crank from polaris Or have Indydan build your crank. Or get the updated crank and have Indydan add extra bearings to the PTO side.

06 pistons, and the updated flywheel too. These are what I am planning to do on my 05 in the near future, might as well update anything that has been a problem and they have made upgrade for.

Babbitts has the best price on the crank and updated clutch as well as the flywheel.

I would also have your injectors tested to make sure they are working at 100%.

new intake boots are also a must.
