I'm sorry to keep bugging you guys but, does anyone remember what diameter of the steel rod I will need to beef up the steering head on a 97 MM700?

I know the original steering posts were prone to breaking and I remember driving a round steel rod into the steering post on my 98 MSRX but, I don't remember the diameter of the rod.

Does anyone know the diamter and the suggested length of the steel rod needed?

Thanks

Frosty

I think it was 3/4 pipe, but you have grind a line down the length of it so it past the seam.

i just put some guests on it that work great got one setting around to if u want to buy pm me

1/2" black pipe. Drove it right down flush with top of steering post, added a bit of welding and worked great. That was a 97 mm700. And that little peice of pipe really didn't weigh much!

Long enough to extend below your steering post support. Don't have a MM anymore but that's how I did mine and never had any problems. I think without it they tend to break right at the top of the support. Mountain performance used to sell a slightly tapered aluminum rod that you hammered down inside but after weighing the black pipe and pricing MPIs aluminum rod I decided black pipe was the way to go-and I am usually into lightweight stuff!

Get a pice about 1' long. Hammer it in until it won't move anymore. Cut it flush with the top plate and run a weld around it. You may need to grind the weld if you get too much buildup, so the handlebar clamp sits flat...............SRXtreme

PS. DO NOT use the aluminum mountain perfomance one. It doesn't work, trust me. :P
