What Are Your Thoughts On K&n Or Uni Filters?

I HAVE A 2007 RMK 144 600 H.O. WONDERING ABOUT PUTTING K&N OR UNI FILTERS ON SO IT IS EASIER TO GET TO THE CARBS AND CHANGE JETS..?? ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT.:confused::beer;

I think that if anything they hurt performance. your stock air box gets cold air from outside the hood compartment. If you get rid of it and use filters you are sucking hot air from inside the hood. Also your stock air box really has no filter in it, so there is not much stopping or slowing airflow. With a filter you defently slow air, no matter what filter you use.

Just my .02
I am sure someone will tell me I am nuts.

Removing the airbox permanently to make jetting easier is a bit odd. Jetting isn't something that needs to be changed all the time. If you regularly change altitude (sled at different locations) get a Holtzman ATACC unit.

Unless you're very careful and plan out getting outside air to the filters you are thinking about installing, performance will probably suffer as the carbs will be sucking in warm air and possibly exhaust gases.

One of my riding buddies has a near identical sled to me, he has pods, I have an airbox...his runs like crap 80% of the time, mine always runs great. We both have ATACC.

nuff said.

I think these guys are right ,But if you get the pods up with riser tubes or something of the sort where it can get cold air .I think pods are better than an airbox in that case. It ofers better protection for the motor against snow injestion and such that gutted or modified airboxes often are known for . like an slp airbox mod on edge airbox they work super untill you roll it in the pow and the hood pops. just MY .02

i run a differnt sled 900 mc but k@n works great on mine. acutally had to go 3 sizes larger on the primary jets to keep the egts the same. also there is no problems with deep snow pluging or the intake.

I'd look into SLP's high flow set up. You retain the original airbox, jut open it up a bit. $42.50 is pretty cheap and they claim a 3 HP gain. I've ordered on to go with my new pipe, I'll let you know.....(won't be for about a week).

ask around the pods are by far less likely to cause a bog from being plugged like all the new skuds and cats with super fine screens in the pow plus you can run with out a hood if conditions are right and some argue heated air but that may not be a bad thing if your sled likes to eat belts!

Something like this? See pics below.

Pods/Uni's/K&N's work great if you keep them out of the engine compartment and get some cold air to them. Airbox is there for noise reduction and as a flame arrestor. These filters flow as much as my stock airbox and even more so when I'm doing 50 mph. in the deep snow I put the filter covers on and put a mesh over the headlight opening to keep the snow out. I have a shorty rotary valve cover and this mod did as much, if not more, to improve the throttle response than when I moved the carbs closer to the motor. I'm always sucking cold air with this, even in the deep snow since it is vented to the open air from the back side as well. My speedo has been removed, so when the mesh cover is on in deep powder, I still suck cold air from behind the windshield. People can say what they want about pods, after running this setup, I will not go back to running an airbox, ever. I had to jet richer on every fuel circuit, it added that much air. Even my riding pals comment on the instant throttle response of my sled when they ride it. The folks above are correct, IMO if your pods are in the engine compartment, they probably do hurt your performance. If set up properly, they will out perform the stock airbox though IMO.

I've run filters on my last two mods. The first mod was a 670 Summit with a mesh hood, no hot air problems there and the sled ran great!

The second sled is an 05 Summit 800. I am running filters on it and have experienced no problems as of yet. I am following BRPs specs that are in the BRP racing handbook and their race sleds use Kicka$$ filters. I seem to be getting A LOT more air into the motor as I was forced to jet up in the mains quite a bit.

Just info from my experiences

I have Timbersled's air intake kit on my M7 and its basically 2 airfilters with prescreens to keep the snow off. I have 3 2.5" flo-rites on the front of the hood along with some other venting on my mountainfit hood. Seems to work good, the hood lets a little more snow in than I would like (my bad cutting job opened up the gap more at the front I think) but even with the snow, I haven't found it to be boggy. Just gotta make sure that there is a cold air source getting to the filters.

Funny I hear all this about pods being bad and the stock air box being the best. OK couple of ?s

1. How much more power do you get for every degree air temp?

2. If an 01 Doo airbox is built to run an 800 at peak performance 135 hp as some say, Then how can it also work great for with an 830 mod with 165 hp???

3. In a test I did why did my mod lose 2-300rpm and 150 deg F on the egts from pods to airbox? No other changes.

Now that said I do think an airbox is less likely to injest snow and I will try mine again but with some Flowrites.

Don't mod alot I see. And don't have an 01 Summit which requires two crow bars and a chit load of cussin to install
