West Mountain Marker Tree

Was up on West Mountain yesterday and the marker tree has finally fallen down. The memorial plaque was off and just laying in the dirt. To anyone in the Cascade/Donnelly snowmobile clubs, I put the memorial plaque inside the warming hut at 4 corners but all the snowfall depth numbers are still on the tree and will be covered up soon. Maybe someone could go get them and the club could designate another tree.

It was a nice Tribute and I always stopped to look. Doug, anyone?

Wanted to let someone know,

MX

That plaque should be mounted in the four corners warming hut! In my opinion that is it's proper place. Thanks for taking care of it before the snow flies...many many memories from that spot! They need to install a totem pole for the snow depths and rider carvings right in front for all to see and enjoy. CHEERS AND BLESSINGS TO THOSE THAT HAVE LIVED, DIED, AND SLEDDED WEST MOUNTAIN!

x2^^^^ Well said Rob. That old tree is almost a religious spot for western idaho sledders. Lots of fun and good memories up there! Thanks for getting that out and to the warming hut Mtn X.

This is bad news. I have gone to that spot for a long time. Many years ago (I am talking 18 years) the marker was a destination when our sleds were not made for deep powder. If we made it there we would consider it a good ride. I taught my kids to ride in the meadow next to it.

I think we should try to come up with another marker although that one was very special. I agree with Rob the memorial plaque should be mounted in the warming hut. Good call.

mtn_extreme, thanks for you consideration picking up the plaque.

Thanks Guys, but just doing what snowmobilers do and taking care of each other. We have to protect what we love.

Rob, I also like the idea of the totem pole!

Just another little tidbit. they are logging just north of the warming hut right to the ridge road up from beer bottle crossing. Looks like they are just getting started and don't know how long or how much they will do but if it is like paddy flat area, they could plow the road this winter all the way up ????

Yep that is a very very special place for me too! I've hunted elk, been attacked by rogue cattle, watched the 4th of July fireworks, sledded, skied, mountain biked, atv'd, hiked, and commited other unmentionable debauchary in that spot. That snag tree has shown the way in many a fogged out days up on West. My buddy had a cabin near the parking lot and it was our spot 3days a week for years and years. I took some guys up to ride there a few years back remembering it being quite an extreme place to ride...the hills all shrunk from the hot rod pink 500 efi 121 days!

Someone should just go up dig a hole and stand a hand sewn 12ft 10" log...drop in a bag of ready mix and it's done! But if you see it I didn't do it...

I just emailed a couple of friends that are in the West Mountain club to convey the ideas from this thread. Will keep everyone posted with what they have to say. Thanks, Mtn_extreme.

The West Mountain club prez is meeting with the Cascade Ranger District this week to see what they might allow at or near the site of the tree. Unfotunately if they do allow something, by the time all the official BS is complete it will be too late to have anything up this season. Will update as soon as I hear anything.

Talked to a friend in the West Mountain club today. They got a tentative okay from the new rec person in the Cascade district to put in a 20+ foot pole and numbers and the plaque. However, the rec person has to get permission from "her boss" to okay anything. And she also wanted to know if it could be taken down during the summer. So we will see what happens. For now the plaque will stay in the 4 corners hut.

If it weren't a permanent structure youo might run the risk of it being vandalized sometime during season (early and late). A 20' pole isn't probably going to be the lightest thing anyways, but a steel flagpole filled with concrete would probably last a long time and wouldn't be an eye sore in the summer.

Greetings Fellow Sledheads and Sledheadettes,,

No doubt the Burnt Tree was a very unique monument and a clever location for a plaque to honor a member of the West Mtn Snowmobile Club (WMSC) It's difficult to replace an original but, I know that the WMSC is laying the ground work to establish a new tradition/land mark that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

The interest in re-establishing the Monument and a Burnt Tree type of marker is heart warming, it underscores the sincere sense of camaraderie that snowmobilers have for one another....it's what defines our sport and separates us from the pack.

Dr. Rob and I have been trading e-mail with the WMSC elected officials and general membership, all of the above have been re-energized by the posts regarding the Monument and the Burnt Tree. I would be remiss if I did not pass on to everyone the heart felt gratitude from the WMSC, to those of you who took the time to post your thoughts as well as, Mtn_Extreme who started the thread and retrieved the plaque, thank you all!

I apologize for hi-jacking this thread but it is for a great cause.

While the Monument and the Burnt Tree is clearly in our cross-hairs as a project that unites snowmobilers it's an important issue that is surrounded by a even larger issue which is the ability we are taking for granted each weekend that we sled, that issue is accessing our favorite areas to ride. The WMSC with the assistance of the Idaho State Snowmobile Association (ISSA) has and is fighting for our ability to ride in areas that we have ridden for three decades or more. Developers proposing sub-divisions adjacent to the Andersen Creek parking lot. Ski resorts being developed on West Mt. and their desire to expand their profitability by increasing the land they can reserve for their paying customers. It should be noted that the ski resort in question is experiencing financial difficulties, to say the least, at this time. The history of new ski resorts is they fail two or three times before they turn a profit, the resort won't go away.

Who is our voice to fight for our rights to sled at West Mtn...WMSC and the ISSA. We have an election coming up on November 04, 2008 and it's all about the numbers on election day. Let me share some humbling numbers with you.

36,000 +/- registered snowmobile sled in Idaho
1,000 +/- ISSA members in Idaho
35 Family memberships in the WMSC
5 Business memberships in the WMSC

Please, read those numbers again....

Imagine our collective clout if registered snowmobiles equals ISSA/Club memberships.

The WMSC milestones:

1996: Groomer garage built
2000: Warming Hut at Four Corners

Slowly but surely our membership numbers have been dropping, which has forced our WMSC to discontinue our annual Fun Run and the race to Snowbank. Our club is in need of some 'new snow blood', so da speak.

Everyone is welcome.

My Bride and I are not rich people in a financial way but we do feel blessed to have great health, family, friends, horses and sleds to enjoy the mountains with. With that in mind we would like to invite each one of you who have posted a comment regarding the Monument/Burnt Tree, to attend our next WMSC meeting. My Bride and I will pay for your first year's membership in ISSA/WMCS. Mtn_Extreme, F-Bomb, Anchorman, RMKRider & IDPWDAGRL. You can't loose!

First meeting of the ride season is, December 13, 2008 a shakedown Club Ride 9 am at the Anderson Creek Snow Park followed by a WMSC meeting at 5pm at the Ashley Inn.

Collectively we will all benefit.

Keep your scratchers down,

Craig.

I just got laid off from my job and I am thinking of moving to boise to start my own business. What you are talking about makes alot of sense to me and if I do end up moving there I will try to get a hold of you to find out where the snow park you are talking about is and I would be happy to join and help out with the projects you guys undertake.

Sounds great...we always appreciate the efforts of the local sled clubs and it's hard working leaders! If we are not out of the area on the 13th you'll see us at the club meeting at the Ashley Inn.

Greetings All,

Thanks for everyones Posts!

Hope to see everyone at the WMSC shake down ride/club meeting on Dec. 13.

An action item identified by a fellow Sledhead is our WMSC site on the ISSA web page is in need of updating. I'll see what is involved to update our club information.

Keep your scratcher down,

Craig.
