Is the tool to set the water pump seal necessary?

It can be done with out one if you use sockets or pieces of pipe. I screwed up my first seal learning how. 40 bucks and another engine pull.
It would be nice to have one. I have never seen one or how good they work.
If the outer plastic cracks or the seal gets pulled apart too farr, Its junk
