Water proofing outer layer

I was thinking of spraying on Silicone Water- Guard
(this is the name brand) on my Coat & Pants this year.
Has any one tried it, Does it work or not?

nikwax

x2 for nikwax. silicon stays on top of the fabric and is wiped away. nikwak is washed in and absorbed by the fabric and it lasts all season!

Never heard of stuff like that. Generally it counter productive in most cases due to it clogging the pores of the jacket and which will allow you to sweat and not be able to have it breathe properly.

Get some Gore Tex XCR stuff of maybe the new E-vent and you won't have to worry about it for the first season. Then after that with the gore tex you simply treat it with Revive X and you are set to go.

I've used the NikWax before and it seems to work pretty well. You do need to use both the Tekwash and the waterproofing. On a side note, if you do use it, don't do towels in the wash the next load. I did and they wouldn't soak up the water. They just beaded up on the towel.

The wash-in stuff is great and it does keep your stuff breathable..it's designed NOT to clog the pores in gore tex. Now, if you have a bunch of insulation it's not the best chance as it will block flow in insulative type materials. I washed my bibs (outer material and inner liner) and then coat (has a layer of insulation) and the coat made be sweat. The pants still worked great. For insulation stuff, use the spray-on...not as good as the wash-in but will allow you to still have the coat breath. Usually the wash in is used for the bibs and pants and spray on for coat...just depends on if you have the insulation and many coats do.

x43billion for NixWax. Having worked in the ski industry for many years
it is seriously the only product most people use in the industry to re-protect
their gear... Speaking of which time to redo my pants... :)
