My stock 07 D7 Walker Evans shocks have nicks in the pistons. Carls says they're not worth fixing. If you've got a set on your sled I would strongly suggest investing in some covers from Skinz. I'm going to replace them with the fox zero's. Any great ideas on what to do with the Walker's besides hang them in the shop for wall art :)

Do what I always do with my junk parts...Ebay.

Disclose "nicked shafts" in the auction with a few close-up pics. I bet you'll still get at least a hundred bucks for the pair...maybe much more.

Also, most WE shafts are $60 each from these guys. Unless you have the $150 each version.

How much are those Fox's going to cost in comparison?

Certainly there is nothing wrong with upgrading to something new if that's what you want, but those WE's still have some significant value beyond wall art. I guess I'm a little surprised they just said "not worth fixing" rather than giving you a firm price to rebuild and replace the shafts, and letting you make the decision of whether they're worthy of the price for yourself...

They want to sell you some of there shocks is why they would probably say that don't bother fixin them. Are they the front or rear? I have some rears for sale from an 08 if you needed to purchase rears. 120 for shafts cheaper than new Zros for sure, specially if you liked the WE. Call WE and see what they can do for you.

Call up John in the service dept at Walker Evans directly. 888-933-7223 and see what they want to replace the shafts...
You can have them give them a full service and revalve to the 2009 standards while they are there.

The Deycore parts are for 1/2 and 5/8" stainless shafts for coilover shocks...

The shafts are anodized and nick up very easily... dont throw away that pink foam cover that the sled is shipped with... the tag on that says to install that whenever the sled is not in use!

Walker tried some prototype hard chrome shafts, but they did not work out. (icing)

I was in a sled shop im Montana talking to a guy about W/E shock service.
He said they had a customer that had nicked shocks, and the Polaris price for the slides was about 120.00 a piece if I remember right. They went directly to W/E and got them for about 30.00 a piece. Not sure if you can get them yourself from W/E for that price but maybe your local shop can help?

Nicked shafts update

Thank you Mountainhorse and Snowest Forum. I contacted Walker Evans. Replacement shafts are 51.90 each and a rebuild to 2009 specs is 55.00. The phone number for Walker is 888-933-7223.

I see in the 09 polaris accesories catalog that polaris offers covers for like $15 (don't quote me on price) has any one had any experience with these? I ordered a set thanks

have a set...not really impressed by them at all..just a front cover
they offer some protection i would pick up a set of the SPG if it was me.

Walker Evans rebuild

So if I fix the Walker Evans shocks will I have to re pressurize them again next season?

I'm not sure they are worth putting much money in. I bought a used set of '07's that had never seen the snow for $80 last week. The '09's are improved, Carl's will put you on a list to buy their brand new take-off's for $175/pr.....

I have been using the skinz shock covers for over 6 rides now. They work great. No problems with them icing up or falling off. :beer;

I just ordered 2 of the stock front track AIR-shock covers from the IQ 600RR which I intend to put on my Assault front shocks, perhaps not very stylish but probably completely bulletproof and quite sheap. They were about 240SEK/pc which I guess should mean about 10-20 USD a piece on your side of the pond considering that parts are usually about 1/2 the price for you.

I just put on the zero pros from Carl's along with the Holz skid. I like them, they are stiffer than the WE and do weigh a little more. I liked the WE in the powder, but the 07's were a little soft when hammering down the trails (not intended for this) to get to the hill/powder.

fix'em yourself

I dont' know how badly they are knicked up, but you should be able to repair them fairly easily if they aren't too deep or extensive. We do this for downhill mountain bike fork upper tubes all the time, and they are very similar. Annodized aluminum.

Take super fine emery cloth and sand down any burs that might be on the nicks. Make sure that you get them nice and smooth.

Next, fill the any voids or depressions with super glue. Allow it to dry. Now repeat with the emery cloth untill you can't even tell it was ever damaged. Works like a charm most of the time.

You may need to get new seals if the nicks have already lacerated the seals.

Hope this helps.

mine have nicks, im guessing from the nut on the upper a arm from removal becuase on both shocks they have nicks in the same area and im 100% sure because i put another one in my self installing hahaha. i was fairly pissed but its weird carls said they are not worth fixing........mine are off a 09 and i used 2000 grit sand paper because suitcase on here told me this is what carls told him.........so far so good. if i get a season or two out of them then ill fix them but so far they are good and i have my rydes for back up.

i just picked up 2000 grit from canadian tire in the autobody section and sanded till the tip of my thumb nail ran across smooth. im guessing a sharp nick will destroy the seals and then you loose all pressure.

i got the polaris walker evans shock protectors......my friends like to shoot rocks crossing roads and i didnt think the skinz were enough haha
