It was mid-February and Todd Palin, Alaska's newest first gentleman, was speeding across 2,000 miles of ice and snowy tundra en route to victory in the world's most grueling snowmobile race.

That same week, his wife, Gov. Sarah Palin, was in Juneau requesting more money for the state budget and assuring legislators they'd soon see her plan for a natural gas pipeline that could one day be the most expensive construction project in North America. Then she flew to Fairbanks to wave her exhausted husband across the finish line.

It's not just his title as the state's reigning snowmobile co-champion that sets 42-year-old Todd Palin apart from the nation's other first spouses. And it's not that he's one of just five who are men.

yep..and he would have won it this spring as well except he hit a 55 gallon drum buried in the snow at 70 mph..he flew 70 ft ..his partner hauled him into the next town to get checked out then they went back and fixed his sled and finished..he can ride a sled...It is common for them to run in excess of 100 mph on ungroomed trails..beleive me..they haul ***...

He's a flatlander! lol, i remember reading that he wasnt impressed with the city of Juneau (which is the states capital. Yup, Anchorage is NOT the Cap, for those who dont know) because, it was all mountains to ride!

well i am estatic on this turn of events...heck im in a differant country but we are neighbours to ALASKA being in the Yukon...Sarah Palin has fast captured the hearts of Northern Canadians...she seems extremely smart yet at the same time dowm to earth and as well alot of COMMAN SENSE...her and Todds outdoor endevours and love for all of it is a realistic approach to enjoying the outdoors...im hopeful that this transpires to change some of the tree hugging views that has captured politics at times if she is successful....as a Canadian i am jealous that the opportunity to vote for such a person is availiable to you folks...l think she is a genuine breath of fresh air with a great family..l am glad to see this thread ...i think any state with snow should support her..lol...thanx guys...

Too bad she didn't run for president. McCain wants to take on the big drug companies, one of which I work for. Palin should be snowmobile freindly. I may not be voting for Mccain but he will get my vote for his VP pick.... Hey, it's just a job..........

l.iving in Los Angeles people go on drug runs to Mexico and get drugs at 1/10 the cost here. Exactly the same drug.

Diesel in Mexico is $2.19 a gallon.

It was fun to hear that her hubby "raced snowmachines" in her nationaly televised speech tonight. Other pictures show her posing with a Caribo she shot. Can they win? Could it really happen? I pray it does.

My mom in Wisconsin is fricken loving it too. Family has had season tickets to Badger hockey for years, grew up on sleds (back when they were actually made in our town), and raised 3 kids while teaching school. She called me and was stoked, yeah I said it, My Mom was Stoked! There's a lot of midwestern Mom's like her who are pretty happy to see Palin and all she represents in this race!
