Votes and e;ectorial vote?/

I dont understand this shiz. Right now the 2 candidates are only 70,000 votes apart but the way the news is talking Obama is winning by a landslide due to the electorial votes. Who the *** is the people that do the electorial votes? As I understand it, they dont have to vote as the populous does? If that is true then why even vote at all? They need to do away with that crap and go by the total number of votes by the people of the nation. We have the technology.

We needed Ohio. IT'S OVER. The only hope is that McCain wins a west coast state or Hawaii and that is unlikely. Unless he wins one of those states the absolute best he can do is 267 vs. Obama's 271.
