Voltage questions????

So I went out riding yesterday and my sled felt great but made me stop and worry a few times. Near the beginning of the ride, I started up my sled to have no power to my gauge cluster. turned it off and right back on to a working gauge cluster, then took it for a spin and had a few bogs or sputters at low speeds. Continued on for a while and no more problems until I fired up my sled to see my battery level (top right of screen) only having one bar and blinking at me. after getting it moving my battery gauge level rose slowly but did have a few times when riding where my RPM gauge stopped showing up or just stuck in the same position for 5-6 seconds at a time. Basically my battery level was seen anywhere from 1 bar and blinking to full power during the ride. I made it back home but worry that something serious may be about to go wrong. Could it be my stator about to go out? Voltage regulator going bad? please help

Also, my idle RPMs are a little low. I would say they averaged 1050 when just sitting there ready to ride a warmed up sled.

Voltage

Double check ground. If Ok then it's probably the reg/ rectifier. What model and year of sled? The 11-12 have both a reg and a rectifier. Reg simply puts a load on the AC side not the gauge/ECU so if you have that model sounds like rectifier. 08-10 have rectifier only. Change it before it hurts the ECU.

This has been a very common issue with the 07-10 CFI-4's. The Voltage Regulator has taken a dump. I would replace it immediately before it takes out the ECM. It may already have but you won't know for sure until you replace the VR and check for proper operation. Before starting the sled up after you have replaced the VR, remove the ECM and flip it over and check for bubbling of the rubber epoxy in one of the corners and/or a burnt smell.

Some of us keep a spare VR in our backpacks. I would also strongly recommend adding an additional ground strap from the chassis ground to the motor. Rear PTO motor mount stud seems to be an easy location.

Some have also installed a small computer fan directly above the VR and relocated the capacitor to help keep it cool as they seem to run way too hot.
