voltage issue?

i have a 2000 800 rmk, and when i frist fire up my sled my lightts and every thing work great for about 5 minutes or less, then they go dim, and very spiratically they will flicker bright and go off to the dim stage. and i noticed last weekend while in the hills my tach was acting up, it would work one second then not the next. also when the tach was doing that it seemed that my motor would respond to the rpms i neeeded, so idk whats going on, some say voltage regulator and another post said it was the tach, what does this sound like?

sounds like the voltage regulator to me my 2000 700 did the exact same thing to me and i replaced the voltage reg wit a artic cat two wire one they are much cheaper and stronger

and do i need to splice anything or just plug in?

They just plug in. And most any decent cat parts guy will know what to give you if just ask them for a 2 wire voltage regulator to use on a polaris. Common upgrade. They were from like mid to late 90's cats

lights

You have something shorting out. I had a 2000 800 in 3 weeks ago that was on it's 3rd reg. and who knows how many bulbs. At an idle with a good reg in place it was showing 9.5 V ac. After the repair it was 12.5 and would go up to 14.5 when the RPMs were brought up. Found a wire rubbed back where they come out from under the seat and go down along the tunnel and under the plastic cover before going to the tail light. Very common problem on the 2000. Look at that and then check your voltage at an idle. Probe the yellow/red wire down by the reg.

well i tried the ZRT cat regulator and seems to work, not sure cause have not run the sled yet, but all the electrical seemed to work way better than it ever did, so thanks for the help guys!!!
