my brother made this movie from our trip to laramie over new years. We called it "Team Climbax, ride til it hurts Vol. 1". He said this is just a start and has a lot more footage to do. Lol, at the end when I was putting snow on the tunnel, we were making fun of the guy who rides the xp, always thinks his sled is overheating so he stops to pile snow on the tunnel every 5 minutes.

permit? I guess I didnt know anything about that. Pulled out our camcorders and taped stuff when we were riding, and put it on youtube to share with our friends, not like we are selling them or anything. Can you not do that? asking seriously, not being sarcastic.

pm'd ya bud

According to the forest service, anytime you take pics or video of national forest on national forest you have to have a permit. I guide and have to have a guide permit to do this, when we film we have to buy a film permit for that day and for however many people are going to be with us. If you don't just realise you may get away with it or you may not! Fines and lose of equipment can suck!!!!

Permit for taking pics????

Thats The Most rediculous thing I have ever heard of. So people can't take pics and video of their fun in the mountains now? Some free country this is. Don't believe it. I think there would have been more talk if it was illeagal

I had nothing better to do today, so I did some checking. From what I gathered, you "should" have a permit for any commercial filming. Commercial meaning if you are creating a product for sale or to generate income. So, if you are creating a video to sell, then ya, I guess that is commercial filming. But there is also a lot of junk in everything I read, so its tough to call as far as a sledding video is concerned. Lot of talk about actors and props, blah blah blah. Someone else read through it and see what you come up with.

Here are two sites i found.

Good post buddy, but you need to read the whole thing, it says from anywhere public is normally allowed to view. Pretty much meaning from the road and commercial also means posting it anywhere on the internet I believe. Just wanted to make people aware of this and to be careful.

Am I missing something? I don't see why you would need a permit for taking vids or pics.

Filming Permits
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Do I Need a Film Permit?
Casual use activities which normally involve noncommercial still photography or recreational videotaping would not require a permit or fees. Casual use means noncommercial activities occurring on an occasional or irregular basis that ordinarily result in little or no impact to public lands, resources, or improvements.
Still Photography

Most professional and amateur photographers are allowed to take still photographs on public lands without a permit or the payment of any fees. Public land visitors and recreational, professional and amateur photographers do NOT need a permit to take still photographs unless the still photography will:

Use models, sets or props that are not part of the site’s natural or cultural resources or administrative facilities;
Take place where members of the public are generally not allowed; or
Take place at a location where additional administrative costs are likely.

Commercial Filming

A permit is required for all commercial filming activities on public lands. Commercial filming is defined as the use of motion picture, videotaping, sound recording, or other moving image or audio recording equipment on public lands that involves the advertisement of a product or service, the creation of a product for sale, or the use of actors, models, sets, or props, but not including activities associated with broadcasts for news programs. For purposes of this definition, creation of a product for sale includes a film, videotape, television broadcast, or documentary of participants in commercial sporting or recreation event created for the purpose of generating income.

Commercial filming or still photography will NOT be permitted if it is determined that any of the following criteria apply:

There is likelihood of resource damage that cannot be mitigated;
There would be an unreasonable disruption of the public’s use and enjoyment of the site (beyond short-term interruption of use of the site); or
The activity poses health or safety risks to the public that cannot be mitigated;
Commercial photographers and filming companies should contact the local BLM office to advise them of their activity and determine whether or not a permit or fees are required. Each local BLM Field Office authorizes filming on public lands within its jurisdiction. Each location is unique and is subject to different conditions.

For more information on film permitting, please contact Vanessa Engle.

Read a little deeper buddy. If it appears on a website such as this one without the permission of the usda you can be fined. The actual law is 15 pages long.

Hey snowcross, Just contacted The natioal forest service. And You would probably need a permit because your a Guide. But us as the public we don't need a permit unless you intend to make money on the film or pics. If your just posting to share and not make a profit ITS OK!! So your WRONG!! I think I'll take my chances!!

By the way NICE VID Jlebrun_05 Awesome stuff. Keep it coming!! Forget that snowcross guy. He's wrong unless your going to sellit for money. I called the Forest service. If you sell it then you need a permit.

I asked the ranger that I ran into at Albany.
He said if it is casual recording and not-for profit it is fine. No problem.
If you use the video to promote a product, sell as a sledding video or to demo something, then yes, you need a permit.

Now that may be their reading of it and another forest service regeon or administrator may read it differently. I asked because I pretty much tape every ride I go on for my own use.

Who was the ranger Ollie? You are right about each of them reading it differant. I could show you what it actually says on the permit itself, way differant.
