Video experts, how do I digitize and post....

some analog home video?

Here's what I'm up to. Due to Wildcard's tragic death, as a tribute to him and his love of sledding, I'd like to post a couple of video clips for all our Snowest'ers to see.

My problem: I'm an old guy, but not senile yet, LOL.:face-icon-small-win but I have never dealt with video clips.

My video cam that took the footage from the SW ride is a Sony Hi-8 compact video tape, analog camera (no digital in those days), vintage 1993. It takes excellent near broadcast quality video, even as old as it is.

This is footage from a party at Lakeside Lodge, and not riding, as I remember since I have not looked at this video for a very long time.
(Oh, Also have some footage of a very young "Cowbell" from this forum.)

My main computer is a Sony Vaio notebook, '05 model year, model VGN-fs760, with 3Gig Ram, XP-home.

OK help me figure out what I need to do to first digitize the video, and then up-load it to a site such as Youtube.

Help appreciated, wise-a$$ responses laughed at, but ignored. LOL.

Ther'es a handful of cheap-ish analog-to-USB video adapters on the market.... might want to try one of those.

If you have access to a digital video camera.... Some Sonys support analog INPUT on the same cable you'd play through to a TV with... and that can go either to tape or straight to 1394... go camera to camera to computer...

Or you could get a video card with an analog input....

....Or stop by a camera store sometime, they usually have Tape-To-DVD services... won't do the editing for you, but that'd get it to the computer.

What software do I need?

Good suggestions to get the signal into the 'puter, but what software program do I need, or is there something already in XP?
Thanks.

Not too sure about software.... I'm Mac-powered, that comes with decent video import/edit apps. I think there's a "windows movie maker" that seems popular that may be on the machine.

I dunno... yeah, I have a "windows movie maker" on here (dell @ work). Might try that.

As said before.. You best bet is to find someone with a newer (last 5 years) digital video camera. It doesn't matter if it still uses tape, as those are digital too.

Anyways, the newer digital video cameras enable pass through. So you use your video camera or vcr, connect it via the 3 rca jacks (yellow - video, red/white - stereo audio) to the newer camera. The newer camera can then be connected to a computer via firewire (IEEE something) or USB. Firewire is preferred.

Basically, all newer video cameras enable pass through A/D conversion. It works pretty easily as long as you know how to capture video from a digital video camera to your computer.

As far as software, I use Adobe Premier Elements and Sony Vegas. Elements can be had for about 50 bucks I think... While you get a crap load of functions, it seems to be pretty stable. You will first be creating a movie in avi format (mpeg2) and then after the video is made you will compile or render it to a smaller version to be used on youtube.

There is tons of info on the web too, almost too much. This site rocks though
