very small avy kills skier

Scary

Between that one and the roadside slide that caught that snowmobiler, I am pretty freaked out about the conditions now. Seems like some crazy stuff is happening this year.

Sounds like he might have fallen and was "bogged down" and the slide came down and covered him up. Also said they were digging with their hands. Spooky out there.

I have gotten funneled into gullies like that a lot while skiing. Always freaks me out. Gravity and momentum is your only power source so you sometimes end up places you don't want to be. I wonder if a bag would pop you up and out of the slide in a terrain trap like that or would you just get pushed under?

In a slide this short, the bag would probably not get pulled and then inflated in the short time period that the snow was moving. Also for the properties of flotation are almost non existant in a slide like this. Airbags need tons of snow movement for the displacement to take place. The skiers only real chance of survival was beacons and shovels. Very sad.

I for one, years ago was very ignorant regarding slides. I thought they had to be the BIG ones. NOT.:nono::nono: I think the smaller ones are more deadly due to the fact they lure you in to a false sense of security. I, many times said "that wont slide, and if it does it wont hurt you":face-icon-small-con:doh:

This year has been precident setting regarding the instability of the snow. Very dangerous everywhere it seems.

Be safe.

Very good point!!!!

that video really strikes me . about 1o days ago i spotted a small slide on the side of the highway that made me think ."how in the world did that ever slide". its just one of those spots like the other video we have all been watching of the sledder buried on the trail.

now having watched this video and recalling what I saw the similarities are scary . that little slide along the road was clear down to the dirt just like that . the more I think about that the more I realize I had no idea what I was really looking at in that moment. We "RODE SAFE" or so we thought . I have learned a lot this season.
