Vents and belt cover?

I will be installing some vents on a friends XP and was wondering if the side of the belt cover is really needed or not. On polaris they just have a cover over the top of the belt so when you add vents the cold air is direct to the clutches and there have been no problems with this setup.

So, has anyone removed the belt cover or drilled holes into the side of it on a XP? This seams logical to me for increasing cold air to the clutches when adding vents to the side panel.

do Not take it off. It prevents the door from rubbing on the clutches. I drilled mine out though and the structure is still perfect but it should allow more air to circulate through there....

I completly removed my plastic cover and after 800 miles of all mountain riding in the deep it is good. It has spent plenty of time on the side covers. it did wear off the end of one of the attachment posts of the side cover, but no actual damage to the side cover itself.
I guess if you laid the sled on its side and jumped up and down on your side panel it may posibly hit the clutch.
