venting the oil tank?

I had two motors blow due to lack of oil. Both covered under warranty thankfully. But after all that, I took matters into my own hands and fixed the problem. I took the smallest drill bit i had and (by hand) drilled two holes on the inside of the cap. This way the cap is always venting and the motor is always getting oil like a 2-stroke should. last winter the sled never ran better. But the vent kits that are offered above a nice.

There are two kits available that vent the oil tank. The first one to come out was a direct vent line out of the top of the oil tank that is routed where the fuel line vent runs. (See pics below)
The vented oil cap is the second design that came out last year. (see below)

I have one of each. I have a direct tank vent kit installed on my 2013 SBA and I just picked up a vented oil cap from Mark Paaso this past weekend for my 2015 RMK LE 155. I guess if you're worried about warranty the vented cap avoids that problem as you could simply swap it out with the original cap prior to bringing it in for service. It's also easier to install...can't get much easier than swapping the cap and routing the line. Either way, they both work very well. On my SBA I always had an air bubble coming out of the oil tank and would occasionally get air bubbles in the line. Once I installed the tank vent I never had another air bubble again.

I would think you could buy any of the tank vent materials at any autoparts suppier.

I would recommend the Paasoracing vent cap to the direct line.

A: as mentioned above if any warranty issues come up you can just easily switch back to the stock cap.
B: Never having done it before one would have to assume it would be more work to drill into the oil tank(risking debris inside the tank) to get the same result the capvent will give you in seconds.
I bought the Passo cap it was 50$ cdn to my door.

I would stick with the cap but that's just me. I wouldn't want to drill into my tank and risk getting debris in it.

No engines blown here, but i did this same little trick early on and oil consumption increased about 20% . . . so right on track now. No need to buy these "kits". Just a couple well placed VERY small holes inside the cap....all is good.

Cheers!

Anyone with these vent modifications notice oil leaks when you find your sled upside down?

A small drilled hole inside the cap will drip when upside down for a couple minutes. JMPE on two sleds. The kits have a one way vent trap and shouldn't leak.
