Here's a good hint to drop for someone trying to figure out what you want for Christmas: The Utah Avalanche Center is offering 2 classes this winter, each consisting of an evening indoors learning about avalanches and basic winter survival followed by a day on snow in Thousand Peaks Ranch (the only way you can legally ride there..) with Craig Gordon, the Boondockers crew, and other avalanche instructors learning basic avalanche skills and how to up your riding game.
Alternatively, you can pay for the class yourself and give your family the gift of greater confidence that you will come home at the end of the day. If that is not a positive thing for your family, you probably have issues that we can't help with
