Using track as a winch........

to pull a machine out of a tight/steep spot supposedly works good but I've never used this system before.

How exaclty is the rope fastened to the track? I've heard tying it to both windows is the way to go but would be curious to hear from some of those who've used it?? Must be kind of hard on the belt if your not careful??

Thanks in advance!

Glen

use a 1/4 or 3/8 rope and tie it to the crossbar where it drives from and will wind it around as the track turns-then retie as you run out of rope--dont use to much rope that it gets bound up

If you're not along and have a partner to do this with you, you can use it like a capstain where you give run it up through the top, around the front by the driveshaft, and down out the bottom. You just hold the end of the rope back by the bumper, and if you someone else run the throttle, it'll work just fine. That way you don't have to tie anything off and give any undo pressure anywhere.

A bonus to that is you don't have to stop and untie AND unwrind to reset it, you just have to unwind.

Someone used to sell two aluminum tabs on a strap that hooked into the windows on the track.You had to roll the sled enough to hook and then unhook when it came out the back and re atatch at the front again.Kind of time consuming but if you were in a bad enough spot it worked.:beer;

this sounds like it could be dangerous to man and machine if not done carefully

LOL, no doubt, but the train wreck has probably already happened by the time I'll be prepared to use this trick.

Thanks for the info!

it didn't used to be as effective because mtn sleds didn't have reverse to unwind the rope; but now, most new sleds have the "unwind" option;)

I saw this work ten years ago- alot of work unwinding, but got the sled out of a place you would have needed a heli otherwise.

trying to picture your capstan but having trouble could you please try to explain it to me just one more time please & thank you

do you think you might need to make 2 loops around the track to use it like a capstan winch?
