used truck purchase

how agressive should a guy be when making an offer on a used truck. say 2 yr lease return. does it make any difference with the slow down in new sales?

It had better make a difference! For what they offered me on my 07 EDGE!!! You should be able to pay 4-5 grand less than what they are asking!

Maybey not that much but dealers should be getting aggressive!!!

For sure. The buy out on a 2 yr old lease is more than it is worth right now so don't let sales guy pitch you the old cost line. Take into account all the rebates on the new 08's that are out there.

You should always start negotiations low - tell them they will have to pay you a grand to take it off their hands.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to walk off the lot and go somewhere else!!!! Number one mistake people make when buying anything is they get emotionaly attached to the vehicle and think it's the only one out there like it. Remember you don't HAVE to do anything so don't let yourself think you do. Best advice my ole man ever gave me about purchising a car, don't be afraid to walk off.

If you are buying a lease return vehicle, the price will be too high. The residual value (the price the lease outfit needs out of the truck) was set on that truck 2 years ago when it was sold and the world was a better place to buy a truck than it is now. Every single GMAC lease return that we get is going back to GMAC where they roll them through a dealer only auction and take their chances. I used to buy about 50% of the lease returns especially if they were clean, serviced in our dealership and were under miled. Now it doesn't make a difference. If I pay the residual value on the truck, I am high. No incentive to buy it. If I see an interesting piece, I'll flag the auction and watch for it. In al cases, the real market value for the day is lower than what I would hae paid for the truck at residual.

Best thing to do in my opinion is walk, my last truck I left my card and told him what I was willing to pay ( low balled) left went home and 4 hours later and numerous phone calls back and forth I drove back and it was detailed and waiting and they got within 500.00 of my offer. Much easier sitting at the house with a beer thinkin about it instead of their office, plus you'll know how interested they are in selling when they call you right away. Yes mine was used also.

Depends on if their price is in line with the market price.

If model X is selling for 20K and they're asking 20....are they going to discount just cause you're a nice guy? Depends if it's a hot selling item or not. If the guy up the road has the same thing for sale for $25K, maybe he'll give you a 4K discount and the guy at 20K will hold firm.

The Ford dealer down the street has a USED year-old Yaris listed at $18,999. We sell that car _brand new_ off the Toyota lot for $18,140 (full retail). But they'll give you a 3K discount, we won't, and the new one is still the "better deal."

dealers will **** you anyw ay they can.

The ******* that sold me my current rig kept psuhing the securty system, for anothr $600. Evert other csenctence this guy said was "yo ushould get the security system" blah blah blah.

I held strong that id didn't want it. FInally got the keys and it had a securty systrem, asked him wtf was sthis and he said it already came with one.

Id go thorugh a personal sale, beter pricea nd they renot paid on commison.

Hold on!!

First off//

You are buying a truck? not a "Sport ute"/?? :beer;:D

Ok now that I am out of my bewildered state.. LOL Just because the fuel prices are down, and it looks good again, don't let the dealers get that "hand on you" keep your price, if it is a good offer, they will call you back/.

Some good info. Thanks.

used truck

I bought a new leftover last March. I got the teflon treatment[ interior, exterior] which I now regret, it costs quite a bit and the paint still gets dull and the seats can get stained. It is a chevy 2500HD ,paint doesn't seem as good nowadays.Teflon and the other addons could be just to increase the profit on the vehicle. Chevy has promotions for my region but they don't seem to be including the 2500 hd, probably still a market for them,I bought mine basically to tow a trailer and small backhoe. plowking

There are incentives on just about every GM vehicle built (especially ones that burn lots of gas).

On comments made about buying paint and interior protection etc., the only thing I ever buy is if there is an affordable extended warranty program and maybe undercoating and mudflaps. The rest isn't worth the price of admission.

There are millions of cars for sale out there. THe right deal for anyone who wants to look is out there. Your job as a consumer is to realize when you've found the right truck and pay what you want to a dealer who will accept it.
