UPRGADE SHOCKS OR GET HEAVIER SPRINGS

I find that my 163 PRO will bottom out on the rough trails, I am about 220 with out gear, I have been thinking about doing the HOLTZ rear shock upgrade on both of my rear shocks has anyone done this ? I am
not a high flier but I do ride hard and enjoy a good jump from time to time. would a shock upgrade be the way to go or would the heavier springs be enough ?

Polaris makes a heavy spring for that...

The shocks are actually a good unit...you are a bit bigger than the average rider they designed as the "average"...

Holz can Re-valve the shock for you...this will bring the compression damping and, importantly, the rebound damping from the heavier spring into a good balanced package.

You could get all 4 shocks re-valved... and the new spring for under $400 with shipping... pretty good deal IMO.

To me, it sounds like you dont need to "throw the baby out with the bath water)..

Good luck.

Thank's Mountainhorse

Maybe I will give the re-valve a try, I was most worried about the rebound if I went with the heavier springs, I have been happy with my front shocks for the most part so will likely only do the rear for now, just don't want the sled to start jumping around like a jack rabbit. The upgrade I am talking about would give me a new rear shock with the piggy back and use my old spring,s and a re-valve on the center shock, cost would be around $600 with shipping, so doing the heavier spring's and re-valve would be a better deal if it will work as good.

I have been thinking the same thing, am a heavier guy also about 250 w/o gear and spending 400-600 on a re-valve and heavier springs is a lot more appealing then 2k on new shocks...for a Brand new sled.

This is the route that am going to also take

If you have a full season on your shocks... time for a service anyway.

If you don't have much riding on the sled (sub 500 miles) I agree with Frisco.

$75 for the re-valve each at Holz... Custom tailored valving really makes the difference in any shock and is a contributing factor as to why the aftermarket shocks offer noticeably better ride.

Dont get me wrong though... Aftermarket shocks like Z-Broz and Fox are top notch units with features that the factory cant afford to put into the consumer sleds and still offer them at a reasonable price.

I dont have any miles on the sled, its for a 2012. So i take you from what you guys said is just replace the back spring on the rear, the front rear spring and the 2 front are fine...correct?

Yep... replace the Rear track shock spring... I would also think about getting Holz to revalve the Front track and rear track shocks as well. Especially the rear.

At your weight... having the shocks custom valved (tailored to your weight)... would take a good set of shocks to very good.

Holz can do this all for you. (they do not sell the spring)...

The spring part number is in your owners manual.

Good luck.

Thanks MH...this is what ill go ahead and do, am still new to sleds and don't have a clue on how to set up the suspension, i know quite a bit about dirt bikes, but this is all new to me!

I am 245 without gear. Tried the heavier rear spring but found it too stiff for rough trails. The stock one overtightened four turns worked better but is hard on the tunnel. I put on a turbo and there was no way to keep the front down with the stock skid after that. Going to try either a Kmod upgrade or possibly a timbersled on my 2012 turbo. Gave up on the stock front shocks and swapped to Evol R's and loved them.
