under tunnel exhaust?

Broke trail on about 20 mi. of road in deep snow last night. 40-50 mph the whole way with front end up out of the snow leaving a deep trench behind me and the engine never missed a beat. Definitely think its more of an intake problem.

Baapex, do you have a link for the 2 cool vents?

did you do any venting or just keep the hood above the snow? I really only have the problem when i burry the hood. I hope these will fix it. I love powder! FYI 2 cool e mailed some pics of a new apex hood vent that they just built. It looks sweet!

Haven't added vents yet. Just saying I can run in deep snow all day with no problems. Just over the hood snow that gives me trouble which makes me think its more of an intake problem than backpressure problem with the exhaust configuration. Thanks for the link.

ok I just made it back from a trip to halfway OR sat and the problem still exists. It was a lot better with the new venting, I posted a pic, but if you burry the sled it starts to run rich. also i noticed that on any time you held it wide oped for any period of time it would start doing it and then get progresively worse the longer i went. My 0.02 is that while the intake air helps it is not the real problem, the under exhaust is! I think my next step is to have an exhaust guy fab me up an elbow or y and turn the exhaust out the side of the tunnel that way there is not forced snow from the track being thrown at it. I like the idea of a y and coming out both sides so when your side hilling it still has an open side to flow through. has anyone done this? What do you guys think? My dealer thinks it will work awesome, I hope so.

I have a glasspack under the tunnel of my RX-1 and like you, I love the new found power and the weight loss benefits of the under tunnel exhaust. From looking at your pictures I think part of your issue is where (and the way) you dump your exhaust into the tunnel.

I think you need a slightly longer extension elbow on your exhaust pipe to drop the exhaust BELOW your deflector shield. In the first pictures it looks like half of your exhaust is going above and half below your deflector shield. This would create a tremendous amount of tubulence and mess up your back pressure horribly.

Then I saw where you said you routed it all above the deflector shield and I had to ask myself where is the exhaust supposed to go? It will fill the void above your deflector shield and then blow back into the flow of your exhaust trying to escpae form the pipe and create even more back pressure and turbulence.

In my humble opinion you need to create as free flowing of an exhaust escape route as possible (with a 2 1/2" Camo Extreme spinning inches from the exhaust tip).

Heck, maybe adding a long straight extension and going right out the center of the back of your tunnel extension would be best?

Good Luck

cant ride tomorow gotta work, so i can pay for all the extra parts to make this damn exhaust work right! you would think when you pay 500 bucks for an performance exhaust that saves weight and adds horsepower it would at least out perform stock.?!? Not so .. now that i'vespent 370 bucks on venting and it only mildly helped, more of a band aid on the problem, i had to spend another 200 bucks at the exhaust shop to fab up a y pipe and turn the exhaust out both sides of the tunnel. I thick this is going to work out awesome. it sounds great cant get plugged up, and no more back pressure, plus i can dry my gloves again! haha. I'll post some pics when i get her finished up and tested.

a hotdogger would have been nice! guess i'll have to live with cold sandwiches. I don't stand that far back very often andd if i do only for a brief moment I think my pants and boots will be fine.:D

Holy crap I did get to go riding today , and it worked freaking awesome!!!!!! This is the way the exhaust should have been in the first place. It sounds sweet and it never even thought of hesitating no matter how bad i burried the hood or how long the climb was. I am very happy! I'll make up some trim rings to clean up the exhaust exits and never mess with it again. I may make some sort of angled deflector shield to keep my feet away, just in case, but I never really even got close to the exhaust riding today. I still cannot believe what a difference it made . The conclusion, an under tunnel exhaust exit does not work at all in my mind, it causes way too much back pressure and will run like shi*!:D:D

my $.02

I have an 03 rx-1 that i just put the undertunnel on and a highride boss and frankly with the other stuff i have done to this sled it improved the ride so much by not carring a pack that if i just have to deal with a little bogging im willing to sacrifice it in those coditions. Ive haven't riddin in oth powder so i might not know my a$$ from a hole in the ground on this subject yet but this is something these sleds should have had from the factory.
