alright,

found a wrecked 97 ultra SPX that was pretty banged up but the motor was sound... we bought it in hopes to putting the 680 tripple into a 93 xlt mod that we have been building up...

Need some advice/ guidance from you guys that have done it, just to get some answers like how did u move the motor mounts, did u transfer over the coolant tank, oil tank etc... wiring harness. started tearing it apart but just have some questions.... thanks guys!

No ones done it??? Ive got most of it figured out for the most part... I found out the tripple pipes on the SPX do not fit in the wedge body...

Someone out there has done it, Ive seen it.... a little help would be appreciated.

How does the spacing on the motor mounts compare? I had to cut out the motor mount on the bulkhead to do my ultra into a gen II twin chassis. How much wider is the ultra motor compared to the xlt motor? I'm curretly running a 93 xlt chassis with a d/r and the stock motor with triple pipes. Doesn't seem like a lot of room for pipes. My friends old ultra wedge bodied sled had part of the hood cut out to clear the pipes and it still rubbed. I'm sure you could do a little playing around with the pipes by slicing the bare minimum out to turn the pipe and reweld it in place. I would definitely try to run as much ultra stuff as you can. I ran into oil and coolant tank issues with my swap but it wasn't too bad.

The width of the motors are different. but now I have the motor mounted in to where it needs to be, now I have airbox issues. stock xlt airbox doesnt work cause carbs are different spacing, and the ultra spx airbox doesnt work cause the steering shaft hole is not lining up where its suppose to be so I can hit the holes for the carb boots.

I havent even got to the coolant and oil tanks yet, I am sure I will have problems with those as well... u know for being the same bulkhead u think this swap would be a lot easier..

I wonder if the airbox from the ultra spx(aggressive body) differ or are the same as the ultra sp(wedge body)???? Maybe I can just pick up a ultra airbox from a wedge and maybe it wil fit...

I have some more research to do, if anyone knows what works and what doesnt work please let me know, thanks

??

I was looking through all the information and diagrams of this I could find and from I can tell the gas tank it different for mounting the oil tank and the exhaust mounts are different but the airbox looks as though it would fit. Unless the motor is not exactly where it needs to be. Does anyone have any experience with this issue. on paper I can't see the problem but yet there is one and things don't fit.

I am also currious if the straps make a difference since they look like even if you line the holes up they hold the engine at a different height in the sled. just the angles they are bent at appear different. would this cause things to not line up?

I actually ended up re-drilling the holes in the straps to push the primary closer to the bulkhead. I ended up with a pretty big spacer on the secondary to try and get the belt alignment right. I may end up yanking the motor, re-drilling again, and moving it over as far as I can to reduce the size of the bushing on the secondary. The airbox lines up fairly good with the straight steering shaft that I had to put in.

How much clearance do you have from the bulkhead to your fixed sheave on your primary? This is where I think I need to shift the motor over on mine. I'm going to reduce it but still allow for motor flex.

ultra swap

Its a lot of drilling , trial and error! I helped put an ultra in a 96 xcr due to it burning down three times in three years. We had plenty of mounting straps to choose from found the pto side that fit made 1/2" spacers for front of mounts.

We used slp pipes for the 1996 ultra (indy chassis) we still trimmed the inside of the hood, and powder pods for intake! Worked well other than wasn't expecting the front end to drop from the heavier motor! rebuilt the shocks uped the preload and ride it!

The tanks worked fine where we used pods anyway!! Hope this helps .
