UAC-Utah Avy Conditions 12-23-08 Update

I’ve been working in the snow and avalanche business nearly half my life and have never seen a more dangerous setup than we have right now. It’s super sketchy out there and dangerous human triggered avalanches are certain. In particular, the western Uinta’s are extremely tricky right now. Triggered avalanches will be large and unsurvivable…. ‘nough said.

Remember- we issue snowmobile specific forecasts for the Uinta’s, Logan and the Manti-Skyline. For more info go to www.utahavalanchecenter.org or call 1-888-999-4019.
Also, if you’re triggering avalanches or see something we’re missing let us know. Call me at 801-231-2170 or drop me a line at craig@utahavalanchecenter.org. If you’ve got pictures, send ‘em our way.

I’m putting together several snowmobile specific avy awareness classes. The first is in conjunction with Weller’s Recreation. It’ll be in Kamas at the S&R building on Tuesday Jan. 6th at 7:00. Also, we’re looking at a presentation with Tri-City in Centerville the second week of January and something in Heber with Plaza Cycle. In addition, I’m putting together a snowmobile specific Level One class and will post more details once the dust settles.

Avalanches aren’t a matter of chance, they’re a matter of choice. Please be careful out there and think about the consequences of your terrain choices!

Craig, I have NEVER seen such danger in our hills OR such awareness of avys by the riders on here. You ARE getting through and all your hard work IS having a very positive impact. I, and I am sure WE, are very appreciative of all your hard work. We are preaching right along side of you. Thank you very much!!!!!!!

Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year to you and all of your associates who work to keep us safe.

Doug

Thanks Craig,
Another thing I would like to remind people is to be prepared yourself with the right gear and also be prepared to save others. I know I have been guilty of leaving without a Beacon because I was only going to ride in the meadows and trees. But it could have been somebody else I saw in a slide and not been able to save them.

BE PREPARED

It is sad that it has taken this long and many tragedys to get the awareness out but it is happening. I was watching TV yesterday and saw it all over Fox news in the AM. One of my employees who doesn't even ski reminded me that conditions were extreme and that I should be safe since he knew I was snowmobiling a good deal over Christmas. Great work UAC. Be safe everyone

Also if you see a group of people that look like they are climbing some stuff they shouldn't be right now, go over and talk to them. I know it's stupid but there are a lot of people that don't know how dangerous it is before they go ride. Let others know how bad it is before they get swallowed up in an Avy. Lets all be friendly to each other on the mountain. Better to talk to them and find out that they all ready know then just assume they know. Especially with the expected up to 3 feet in the mountains in the next couple of days.

With this storm that is coming tomorrow it will only get worse. Tomorrow is the day i get my beacon and backpack kit!

Great post Craig! Thank you for getting involved with the forum and keeping us all informed. I will be out of town until January 1st and pray I don't read any bad news upon my return. Be safe everyone, have a great holiday and please ride to ride again.

I dont have alot of book marks, but the Utah Avy site is one check it before EVERY ride. I no I ride with a few guys who are not on the internet, we need to make sure we get the word out to all the gentiles too;)

just opened up ksl and it said there is a person trapped in an avalanche on Logan Peak. I hope it isnt anyone on this site. I hope they come out ok

Two are dead. My condolences to the family's.
One of my favorite places to ride, and been caught myself in the same area. Scary stuff our there right now....

Hey, good call. May I make a suggestion? Once you get your new gear go out and practice with it. Especially the beacon. New digital beacons are pretty user friendly, but when it comes down to finding someone every second counts. It is helpful to have someone bury one (can even be in your back yard) in a general "slide area" then tell you the last point the victim was seen and practice. Do it dozens of times. If you need an extra beacon to practice with let me know, I have a spare and I live in Heber. Lastly, go to a few of these avy classes. You can never learn enough.
