UAC/NWS- Avalanche Watch

The NWS has rebroadcasted an Avalanche Watch issued by the UAC, which I assume will turn into a warning with the upcoming multi-day storm. We've seen the signs and symptoms all winter.

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH
FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER
RELAYED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
1105 AM MST TUE JAN 17 2012

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE
FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER.

THIS AVALANCHE WATCH IS FOR THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN UTAH
INCLUDING THE WESTERN UINTA MOUNTAINS. A MULTIDAY STORM WILL
CREATE A HIGH AVALANCHE DANGER BEGINNING WEDNESDAY NIGHT AS HEAVY
WIND BLOWN SNOW OVERLOADS AN UNUSUALLY WEAK SNOW PACK. LARGE
NATURAL AND HUMAN TRIGGERED AVALANCHES WILL BECOME POSSIBLE.

THIS WATCH DOES NOT INCLUDE SKI AREAS OR HIGHWAYS WHERE AVALANCHE
CONTROL IS NORMALLY DONE.

FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.AVALANCHE.ORG
OR CALL 1-888-999-4019.

Good time for a reminder.

This round of storms could easily produce slides on slopes most of us would consider safe. things above 35 degrees will likely run naturally during the high precip intensity (rate of water weight in snow/rain being added, not inches of snowfall). those slopes in the 28-35* range may very well wait for a trigger.

due to the fact that we have a faceted snowpack, slides can be triggered from far away. expect to see them being triggered from flat slopes well below the actual starting zones.

No need to try and out think mother nature when she gets like this. Think of it as her time of the month and just avoid her.

Supposed to get 24-36" of snow from Wednesday to Friday. Gonna be VERY dangerous for a while but so tempting considering winter might finally be here. Be safe out there guys!

fwiw,

this isn't the type of snowpack that adjust to new loads quickly. for the slopes that don't clean out on their own, expect the weak layers to be persistent like in colorado. up in the north part of utah we may get things to clean out on its own, provided that there aren't many bridging layers on a particular slope. Either way, the usual rules of thumb in an intercontinental snowpack will have to be shifted heavily to the continental side.

I am thinking the Uintahs might be a bit dangerours when this hits. Maybe the sinks near Bear Lake will be the safest place. When I went there last year it seemed pretty flat everywhere but I have only been there once.

GAME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fixed it, does that satisfy everyone? Can't blame a guy for getting excited to finally see some snow. Wow, I thought other people would show a little more enthusiasm like I'm trying to show instead of just pointing out how dangerous it is going to be for awhile. I KNOW IT IS GOING TO BE DANGEROUS FOR AWHILE, BUT STILL IT'S SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
