Should I be running premium in my stock Apex or is regular fine?

I am pretty sure that they reccomend 91, if you ride at altitude you could probably run 85 without any problem.

Like 8000 feet or higher.

I also heard (through atv sites) that running higher octane in a lower compression engine creates heat.

You will actually run cooler because you won't be burning all the fuel in the cylinder. Lower power, cooler temps, more $$. Doesn't sound like a deal I'd be interested in. Run the proper octane the motor was desinged and tuned for, any less and you'll get detonation and piston wear, any more and you lose power and piss $$ out the tail pipe.
