A few key motor modifications with the Twisted Turbo’s M1000 pump/race extreme kit has given them a well known reputation for excellent performance and reliability.
These modifications include machine work to the cylinders and head, a second set of injectors on the throttle bodies, a torque stop, and one additional motor mount on the front side of the motor.
The stock oil pump is used to supply the turbo. In order to supply oil to the water pump shaft, a hole is drilled and tapped on the PTO bottom side of the case. The one way check valve on the bottom of the oil pump is relocated to this position. This allows primary compression to the pump pre mix through the oil line to the center section.
Next the turbo oil tank, all supply lines and electrical wiring were installed and wrapped in plastic casing for protection from chafing and heat.
The D&D Turbo Y pipe, stock pipe, turbo exhaust housing, and turbo muffler were sent off to Performance Coatings in Auburn, Washington for ceramic and high temperature coatings.
The throttle bodies, air box, turbo, exhaust system and charge tube was then installed.
Shain Stanger of Twisted Turbo’s recommends fabricating a cover to protect the ECM from the elements. This was accomplished by cutting and bending a 1/8 inch thick plastic sheet material to fit the desired opening and securing it with industrial strength Velcro to the bulkhead. I also applied Arctic FX vinyl graphics for a finished cosmetic appearance.
Gauges and the gauge bracket are also included in the Twisted Turbo kit, the tachometer bracket was made by Top Cat Modz, and fuel management is provided by Attitude Industries.
For those technical off camber maneuvers at slower speeds a Lefty’s Side Hiller 2 left hand throttle was installed.
The primary clutch was equipped with D&D Adjustable Magna Force weights; these weights have an adjustability range from 81-97 grams.
For slow technical tree riding I have found that using the Arctic Cat gold spring enables a smooth low clutch engagement.
On the secondary clutch a D&D shift assist was installed for smoother performance resulting in the elimination of any coil bind on the driven spring.
A Black Diamond Xtreme adjustable spring rate cam 36/48 (Turbo Helix) was installed along with their Rock Rollers, and an Arctic Cat orange spring. The Rock rollers have proven to outperform stock rollers in longevity and durability by exceeded measures. If rollers become worn or flat it causes poor clutch performance. This results in excessive heat and blown belts. Rollers are a crucial element to a healthy secondary clutch.
A Black Diamond Xtreme belt deflection adjuster was installed as a means for quick belt tension adjustment.
Another innovative device for the reverse helix is the BDX belt removal tool.
After all these components were installed the clutches were installed and aligned.
WOW!! what an incredible build, thanks for taking the time to post it, Shain told me it is a sweet sled, I am looking forward to more of the build and seeing the finished sled! Killer job Amber!!!
Final Touches:
Straight Line Trackers skis from Starting Line Products were installed.
I have used Arctic FX snowmobile vinyl wraps on my previous sleds and have found them to hold up incredibly well. Arctic FX wraps do not tear, peal or fade. It takes about a week to get a custom wrap made and delivered to your doorstep. The application process takes about 2.5-3 hours and is very easy to do. Jordan, owner of AFX, went the extra mile by color coordinating and incorporating all my sponsors’ logos to enhance the wraps theme.
Black Diamond Xtreme Pro-Lite Series Hood Screens and Headlite Elimination (vented) kit was installed. These create a very clean look as well as weight loss and venting.
The final touch to bring the appearance of this project build all together was the seat. I contacted Greg Spaulding owner of Spaulding Vintage Snowmobile. Greg has the original Arctic Cat embossing rolls. These rolls enable him to manufacture the exact duplicate right down to the texture of the original yellow leopard vinyl material used on the 70’s vintage Panthers!
Through the teamwork of Derrick at Edge Performance and Ray at Black Diamond Xtreme a 2010 Arctic Cat ‘shorty’ style seat was provided and I had a local upholster recover it. The combination of a vintage/modern design created a nice signature representing snowmobiling evolution.
After The Shows:
Now that the snow show season is over a few things needed to be added to the chassis in preparation for the sled to be ridden on the snow.
One was a gas rack and tunnel bag, I used Arctic Cat’s aftermarket gas rack, and a True Adventure Gear's Tunnel Bag. I chose the True Adventure Gear bag not only because of its super rugged design but it also can be secured to the tunnel without the use of an additional rack.
The other modification needed was a lightweight hood equipped with plenty of venting. I used Skinz Protective Gear’s Air-Frame Performance Hood that is spacifically built to fit over turbo exhaust and housing. This hood is equipped with a removable fabric airflow venting system. Another neat feature about Skinz Air-Frame Performance hood is that it arrives disassembled as to be UPS shippable, replace parts if the hood becomes damaged, and very easy to assemble . I was very pleased with this products fit & finished when it arrived, its aluminum frame was constructed very nicely with TIG welds.
Along with Skinz Air-Frame Performance Hood am also using their Pro-Series snowmobile covers this season to protect my sled. The feature that drew me to choose this particular cover was it completely protects the front of your sled, front suspension, and skis from road grim.
First off…..WOW! Talk about AMAZING GREATNESS IN SPONSORS!!!! All the way through this project I was so taken by their support, enthusiasm, pride, and dedication “to go that extra mile” just to see the completion of this project.
