So what's happening with the boon docker turbo kits ? I haven't seen or heard much about them , have they been delivered or is every one have too much fun too post about them

All my buddies who paid for them still have not had them arrive. All of them are pretty upset about it.

Are there any major side effects with the Turbos? All I picture is a few fun rides and then your bottom end or transmission grenades.... Double the horsepower on a 450 engine would be an absolute blast but what's the life expectancy?

Your guess is as good as mine but lets just say that when we started putting turbos and superchargers on the little Phazers there where a lot of blown motors (come to think of it not a single one still running)---my guess is anything over 70HP is a handgranade with the pin out of it.
Now go and proof me wrong:face-icon-small-ton

Maybe the phazer didn't have a good motor to start with? We doubled the hp on Apexes and Nytros. They seem to be fine with the power

haha no kidding, on both of those doubling the HP is still pump gas stuff. its amazing how well they take to boost. curious if the bikes are in the same boat!

Never had a stock phazer blow up so I would have to disagree with the bad motor from the start Idea. Close to the max of its save working limits stock I would agree with.
The question is how close to its design Limit is a 450F , the Factory race teams with 60+hp engines rebuild them every race.
Quite frankly the Apex engine in particular is a boost marvel and to a lesser degree the Nytro is pretty amazing too 450 F's are a big?

KMS Performance has been building single cylinder turbo kits for years.
I'm on my 3rd season with my KMS built Turbo Honda (105HP on Dyno) and as far as I know all the other KMS turbo snowbikes they've built in the last few years are still making roost too.
Haven't seen any BD Dyno numbers but would assume they are comparable.

KTM500

I am starting my second season on a KMS kitted 500xcw bike it has 35 hours of boosted riding and 70 hours on naturally aspirated running. Still going strong and using the same clutch.

Im still running the same clutch too and no tranny issues.
You must have the KMS clutch lockout and countershaft support.
I don't think BD is offering those in their kit.

Yes using lockup and countershaft support.

I just talked to KMS about my 12' KX 450. He hasn't done one yet so I am out of luck unless I shop my bike to him for a build. He was a really cool guy to talk to. He is actually from my southern New Hampshire like me but moved to Phoenix to build engines. He is definitely a boutique shop. He won't send something out the door unless he can test it on his dyno a lot. He had done interesting experience since he has been doing turbos for dune riders on quads a long time. All the Yamaha quads need a sttonger rod to take enough boost to make 100hp, and all the KTM bike motors need better head studs to take boost. What I got out of the conversation was it is a little trickier to build a kit for a bike than a sled. A bolt on kit might be wishful thinking but we will find out soon enough.

I also asked about a turbo 2 stroke single and he said it would be a step more complicated than a 4 stroke and might take the fun out of it if you have to tune it every day.

Ktm kits just shipped couple days ago
Yamaha is next
Then Kawi.

Hmmm. thats good to know. I was told that my kit would be one of the first out the door considering I snowchecked it back before their cutoff date. Wonder when the Honda kits are going out. Must be saving the best for last.:face-icon-small-fro

Doubt you can reliably double HP with no modification on engine.
I think tranny will cope but firstly you have to firm up the clutch.
Secondly use better fuel.
Thirdly lower compression.
I've ridden first season without issues with 0,5 bar boost. Worked very well!
This winter I will boost 0,7 bar and custom made piston.
Maybe all brands of bikes will work but I think KTM 2012 with pressure lubed big end conrod can take boost better than other roller bearing conrod bikes.

I would think with the smart carb compensating for temp and altitude adding a turbo to a 2 stroke should be much easier. I this summer for plan on doing my KX500 for next season

It's what they told me. Mine is a Yamaha and they told me they will ship this week or MAX monday

"It's the first year for these Turbo Systems and they're just making sure they get it right. There are always a few surprises when parts show up and have a different off-set or something. We're certain you'll be very happy with what we send you."

Talking about Turbo's.. Lets imagine a mod to a BD system. A Power Commander 5, with Auto Tune plugged in, and desired mapping to be suitable AFR for a Turbo'd bike.. Do you think it'd work and be a "smarter" option, as it'd basically tune the AFR on the fly not only through the added injector, but also through the bikes stock injector.

Just a though.. I'm not even sure if piggybacking that many times will work, but just thinking about it, it sounds like it might be cheap insurance if nothing else.

Got any thoughts?

Should work. Minus the BD computer, The KMS turbo kits come set up exactly that way with the PC 5 and AT. And it works.
