Turbo Slop? How long should they last

Got a Garrett 3071 and from the turbine side there is slop in shaft both ways. Seems like this wore pretty quick?? 2008 model. Ran mobil 5W30 synthetic.
Is there specs on these for wear? Anyone know of? THX

I could not belive the slop my Garrett had when it came out of the box . I would tell you to inspect the wheels for dings or damage and call it good.

On a side note i have looked at one of our Cat Backhoe turbos after 12000 hrs. It ran perfect and showed no signs of problems. We removed the turbo and found the shaft very sloppy. The compressor wheels were rubbing on the housing , and had made large grooves .

This is a Garrett off of a 2001 Cat 4 cylinder , i dont know if it was a ball bearing or a journal bearing . But i was very shocked to see what it looked like , and it still ran perfect.

The journal bearings need very little slop and a tight for to work properly.

The ball bearing turbos use the "thrust" of the exhaust turbine to bring the ball bearings into their normal operating position, and kind of tighten the up. Try pushing on the exhaust turbine while spinning the compressor turbine and it will feel a lot tighter.

Journal bearings have a thrust washer for that.

I've got a mitsubishi EVOIII and a brand new GT2871R. The Mitsubishi feels way nicer when pushing with my fingers, but the garret feels sloppy. They both work awesome in application.

I would be willing to bet your turbo has very close to the same amount of play it had when brand new.
