Turbo Questions

Hi, I have a 2013 pro rmk 800. Im tossing around the idea of putting a boondocker turbo on this sled, first off, i know very little about turbos so any info helps. Are they reliable/easy to tune? Do they have to be tuned from one elevation/temperature to the next? Ive noticed some people have the air filter sticking out of the hood vs under the hood, any pros/cons to this? Also, my sled has around 700 miles on it, Would you guys turbo a sled with that many miles? Any information is very much appreciated, thanks.

Turbo's are feast or famine. When they are running they are a ball, and when you have trouble, you want to drop them off a cliff.

They can be very reliable, but you have ALOT more things to go wrong. On 1-10 scale, IMO you should be at least a 7 on the mechanical side.

The 700 miles wouldnt scare me one bit.

Where is SD do you live? I would try to hook up with someone that has a BD kit and check it out in person.

Rule #1 to me is "Turbos are not for everyone"

What does everyone in your group ride? One thing I consider with riding buddies is, who will have the patience to help me out, if things go bad.

Yea i know, Ive been around them a little but just dont know much about them. One of my the guys we sometimes ride with has a pro with this set up and is very happy with it, Im in aberdeen. And as far as my budddies helping me out of a situation, that part doesnt worry me at all..

We sold 11 boodocker kits for 2013 pro rmks, everyone is happy all tuned very easy, only problem is the quickdrive belt cant take the power, we are wrecking belts like crazy.

they keep making turbos better and better each year

Thats not what i like to hear about the quickdrive belts.. And with the intake out of the hood, this may be a dumb question, but how strong is that? Only wondering because about 90 percent of the time i get stuck i roll it over to get unstuck.

One of my riding partners has a 13 RMK Pro w/ HM pump gas turbo set up & it runs freakin hard. Let me put it to you this way if I wasn't already riding a 270hp turbo Nytro I would go with the HM turbo Pro. IMO stay with pump fuel kits they seem to be less finicky & usually a lot less problems. He ran a BD turbo 50/50 race-premium last year and it didn't preform as good as the HM system he has now. As stated in the other post you'll need to upgrade your quick drive to either the C3 drive or chain case!! Stock drive belt only lasts about 100-200 miles being turboed. Last I would recommend heat rapping your exhaust if you turbo it. Happy boosting

I have 500+ turbo miles on my stock quick drive belt not a single issue yet.. Running the bd intercooled kit hard at 10-12 lbs depending on snow conditions. No heat wrap either. I do carry a spare belt with me since most places we go its repair or heli out.

So how easy is it to adjust the boost settings? Say i turbo it and im running it at 8 lbs of boost, we get to a sweet hill, i want to crank the boost up a little just for climbing that hill then turn it back down. possible? And whats an HM turbo? Does a boondocker turbo require race gas?

we put in a gal of race gas to a tank of premium, you prob would not have to but we do to be safe.
Boondocker is very simple to adjust boost, just click a few buttons.

Easy to do but not a real good idea. If you are running 91 octane at 6 #s and just change the boost to 11#, the octane level is not high enough to prevent pre-detonation and engine damage. I'm running 100 LL Av Gas at 8# boost for a couple of reasons: easy to get by where I work and half the cost of 110 race gas. It has plenty of power and I dont worry about engine issues. I'm really happy with the BD kit and even though I could squeeze more powere out of it, I'd rather back it off a bit and have the mild manners, and dependability. Its a very driveable sled. trees, ditches, hills, chutes, everything. Glad I spent the $$$, worth every penny.
