Turbo Questions

I am entertaining the idea of putting a turbo kit on my 2010 M8. I have never rode a turbo sled nor do I have any experience with them. I have done a lot of research over the last few months and have talked to many of the different kit builders.

I have a few questions for those of you that have them on a M8.

I plan to run a pump gas kit (6psi) at 0-3000 feet using 100LL avgas because pump gas 90 would not work at my elevation. Most of the kit builder's agree that it would work great and produce 200-220hp.

The questions is what kit to go with. Twisted, Cutler, Push, Boondocker?

I have noticed that some kits cut the stock head, some recommend the 2007-2009 head. Some have no mention of the head at all. What are the performance pro's and con's of both?

One builder recommends I use there race gas kit at low boost to get the benefit of the larger fuel pump and 2 more injectors. But is that really needed for the set up I want?

Turbo lag is the other concern I have. Right now my 2010 M8 is a blast ride the low end is snappy and crisp. But I want more power. Would I lose any throttle response on the low end due to turbo lag? Does one kit work better than the other?

I go on some fairly long rides in the spring up here in Alaska due to the long daylight hours in March and April. Would you guys say a turbo M8 uses twice as much fuel compared to stock or ?

Thanks for the help

Twisted cuts their heads too make more power and adds safety. With a well tuned turbo it shouldnt really be less responsive than a stock sled. And for economy my sled twisted m8 its a little more thirsty, but is definately worth the extra fuel. And not twice as bad on fuel, Maybe 1/3 more. Twisted and cutlers have a really good rep for reliability and customer service . So you cant go wrong with those..

I picked up a 2010 ovs tm8 this summer. It is running 12psi so it is a little different then your planning but there is no lag. In a race with a stock m8 it is not even funny how fast you can get out on them. We have two guys that run the cuttler stage II at 6-8psi and it is the same way, not even close . Fuel milage is surprisingly good. I put a 2 gallon tank on the tunnel and have yet to use it. Also have not got to ride it as much as I'd like yet. lol

my vote is ovs RG tial. u can run 7psi. on 91. Then crank it up on the big pow days

Most of the kit builders I have talked to say that 7-8 psi will be close to the limit I can run with 100 Octane at my elevation 0-3000Ft. So it would be nice to have a kit that would ajust as low as 6 psi.

Twisted puts in a 4# actuator in there rg kit. I was told i can run 6 psi on 100ll at 2000' safely. 6# will make you grin from ear too ear. I would say go all in and get a rg kit because you will want it eventually. Im running 9# on 100ll at around 6000' and it isnt even fair too the other sleds i our group.

No pump gas kit

don't buy a pump gas kit, please, it makes no sense. You can get a $100 actuator for the race gas kits that lets you run as low as 4lbs of boost. The boondockers kit I have comes with an adjustable boost actuator that will adjust the boost from 4lbs to 13lbs in .2lb increments I believe. If you want to run pump gas just leave it set at around 4-5lbs. Turn it up to 6-8lbs with your 100ll and if you want to buy some race gas from time to time turn it up to 10lbs++. It will help you on resell if nothing else, I think a lot more people would buy a race gas kit over a pumper. Everyone says Boondocker sucks for service, but I think there kit works pretty well. I've had two race gas kits from them with no problems, one with inner cooler one without.

lag

oh, and I would say no lag at all. My brother has a stock one and they are about the same within the first half second of launch, then of course mine pulls far ahead...

turbo kit

My vote goes to twisted race kit but it is one sided because this is the only one I have run, I have had great customer service from Shane, his race gas kit can be run as low as 6#s and if your like me and 95% of the boosted world once you get it tuned it you will be itchin for more power in the future.....i have heard good things about other kits as well but it comes down to customer service, if you have a problem for some reason and you cant tackle the job yourself it would be nice to be able to take it somewhere within driving distance to someone that is familiar with what you have, so if you have a dealer or performance shop close by that knows a specific brand of turbo kit that might be the best way to go

I agree with gobig. What ever brand you decide to go with. Dont buy a pump gas kit. It makes no sense. For the money youre spending you may as well have the option of having 260 hp at your fingertips instead of 200. You always have the option to turn it down to pump gas boost if you want. They are only bad on fuel economy if youre full throttle all of the time.

Do you have to re-clutch ever time you adjust the boost up and down?

I really do want to have to buy race fuel, I buy 100 octane in bulk for use in other toys and the price is right about 70 cents more per Gal. for me. I ride a lot and buying race fuel would cut in to the riding budget more than I would like. Plus most of the guys up here (Alaska) who have tried to run race gas kits have burned down (detonation) multiple motors due to our colder temps and higher air density. That is my reasoning behind going with a Pump Gas kit and using 100 octane.

That is great to here. Did you do any head mods to your or are you using the stock 2010 head?

Did BD give you a good starting point with the fuel and clutching spec's?

Thanks,

Jason

forgot 2009 head. fuel numbers were close, clutching ffrom bd was spot on.looking into a custom head. something inbetween 2009 -2010 heads.

I have a Twisted RG 8 , and it has been flawless. Dont waste your time with two injectors , you will end up buying an upgrade later.
