Turbo Noise After Shutdown??

So I have my used Boondocker turbo kit on the sled, I was getting the idle dialed in on it and had verified that the oil pump was pumping oil (Though it didn't seem like much) and when I shut down my sled I can hear the turbo spinning down still which is expected but it seems noisy almost like the ball bearings don't have enough oil in them? It makes a light WRRRrrrrr/growling sound while spinning down after shut off, do any of you get a noise like this?

I have never run a ball bearing turbo before so I don't know if ball bearing noise is normal or not?

How much oil should I expect from a boondocker pump? This stream was small maybe 1-2mm diameter stream when free flowing (the best I can "Explain" the flow without a video). Is the pump junk and time to upgrade? I am going to be getting one from turboboyz for a piece of mind, but I still don't know what to expect for flow? The flow I am getting now seems highly unlikely it will ever be able to make any sort of pressure going to the turbo.

The turbo has some shaft play but reading online I see that it is common especially if there is a lack of oil in them. It also does not have any signs of leaking oil through the seals into the compressor or exhaust turbine. So I don't know when you call a BB Turbo failing? When it completely fails? I don't see any wear from the blades on the housing either.

Thanks in advance, Dan

if there is about a 1/32" of play that is very normal. when you get to the 1/4" of more that is when you need a new center section.

that seems like lots of oil for a bb turbo. they don't really require all that much like a mitsu turbo needs lots of oil and pressure.

A grinding noise like bearing chatter usually means the center section is bad. You can take the intake off and turn it by hand. It will have some play, but should turn smooth and not have any notches or catches in the motion. If it does you need a new CHRA.

Thanks guys, I ordered a new pump from turboboyz just in case. The turbo movement is free still and there are no catches when spinning it by hand. I would say that the play is less than 1/32 as that would be in the range of .030" this is more like .008-9".

Looks like when the new pump gets here I'll just install it and run it!

Thanks, Dan

I just dealt with this same exact problem. I felt my bd pump did not put out enough. Also my turbo had more play then i was used to. So i phoned garret to ask about a rebuild kit. In a nut shell with the ball bearing turbos your fine as long as it spins freely and untill there is rubbing from the fins and housing. They need space for oil to fill.
