Turbo Dragon or Stock Pro

Stock Pro would be my choice. Reason: They seem to climb and boondock very well compared to a stock IQ chassis. My old D8 was not impressive at all compared to the new Pro's or Cats....of course, it could've been the rider too :face-icon-small-con That's just my opinion and experience. I've learned that if you want to build a nice mod sled, start with the best platform you can.

This year, I will be on a '12 RMK 660 - dependable and snorty.

Thanks for the input!

The Pro,
The Pro is a better chassis and unless you are going straight up hills the pro will wip the TD8 in the trees and on any sidehill maneuvering. Might even beat the TD8 all the way around.

The Pro. But I still think that the IQ has a bad rap. Problem is you have to have some money into the front/rear suspension to get them to work well. I almost bought a nice D8 for my wife that had good suspension and a turbo. I was going to sell the turbo and keep it simple for her.

Pro

I had a 08 turbo Dragon and last year went with a Pro. I rode it stock for several months and then I put on turbo on it.
Hands down, do the Pro! Stock it was running so close to the turboed Dragons that I couldn't believe it. It handles much better. It climbs on top of the snow much better than a Dragon. On hard pack the turbo D would probably walk all over the stock pro but not in the powder.
X2 on getting the Pro and then turboing it. If you buy a stock pro you are at the beginning of what you can do with it. So amazing!! I love mine.
just my .02

What is your intended purpose (main use) of the sled?

The Pro Is a hands down winner in the technical riding...Climbing it has the advantage if both were naturally aspirated (no boost). The turbo Dragon will climb better than a non turbo Pro... just a factor of HP. If the Dragon has an after market suspension ... the "gap" is less evident.

The Pro RMK chassis really is the top of the food chain for Polaris.

Don't you already own a turbo dragon?

Do you already own a T-Dragon? Mine opinion is a little different than others that have posted. I ride a turbo-dragon and would not trade it for a Pro, unless it has a turbo. Don't get me wrong it will be the next sled I own. I am just waiting for a couple years when they come down in price when I can afford them with a turbo. (And the turbo builders have the kits figured out) My experience is; I rented 2 pro's last year and took them out over a period of 3 days. They are awesome sleds, but not that awesome without a turbo. We rode on a very deep powder day. I like they way the rode and could jump on them and fill comfortable right away. I just found myself back on my dragon because they couldn't hang in the deep stuff. Now if my dragon didn't run good and was always having problems or you are not the type to do preventive maintenance and are having ruined trips because of turbo troubles, (blown boots, bad reeds, fuel issues, tuning issues) then I would go to the Pro. Turbo Pro yes, stock pro instead of turbo dragon, no.

Thanks for the input fella's.

Two season's ago I had an 08 M8 OVS turbo, and an 07 dragon with SLP pipe and can (I bought the 07 dragon new and rode it in 07, then kept it for my wife and a second sled while I went with my first turbo) I got the M8 for a pretty good deal but it wasn't running correct so after some changes I got it to run proper, it did still have a bit of bottom end lag on it.

Last year I got my wife a stock 800 dragon and then I bought a turbo for my Dragon installed it and ran it took some tweaking but still couldn't dial out all the bottom end lag, thinking it may have been more clutching then lag.

IMO there is no comparison in handling between the M8 and the Dragon, the Dragon is 10 times more nimble then the M8 hands down.

Boosted sleds are awesome, the only thing that drives me nuts is that bottom end burp when you hit the throttle then back off then on again, both the M8 and the Dragon did it. I am a tree poker, but where we ride we still get some nice open pokes and there is nothing better then being in deep powder and having that boost kick in and away you go! I ended up selling my Dragon last year, I sell my sleds every year and get something different.

I think if I could get a turbo dragon that doesn't have the bottom lag in it, it would make the choice much clearer, I don't want to run a turbo PRO until next year once all the builders have all the bugs worked out of them for a couple seasons.

Which brings the next question, what about a big bore kit on either the pro or Dragon, is that going to give me good reliable power with no lag or stumble at the bottom end???

Thanks

Jeff

I have only had experience with Carls Cycle big bore kits (660 kit) and it ran great. I would put them on your list and get their input for your riding style.

Now that Fall/Winter is upon us, there will be longer waiting line every day you procrastinate.

I am a cat guy right now for one reason, the engine, near bullet proof and the best power, but I am not brand loyal so take this comment for what it is, engine aside.
I think the dragon feels better than it is, I pulled up to a hill and jumped on a slp piped D8 and thought, man this thing feels nice and was really enjoying it, then got on my m1000 and went far more places through the trees and probably twice as high, (as it should with more hp). When I followed my previous tracks I made with the dragon on the m1000 it was just as easy or easier. (I did revalve the suspension on the m1000 and it made a huge difference). The only turbo sled I beat on my m1000 was a TD8. Its deceiving in my opinion.

But a m-series on boost is a hand full, I couldn't make mine hardly do anything I wanted until I put a KMOD under it, I can't even begin to explain the difference it made, it still rode like a cat, but if you where to ride a PRO to its limits: steep sidehills through the trees they are overly impressive, with the TM8 with a kmod I felt just as comfortable as being on a pro (but with more power)

The Pro is far Superior to any other stock sled last year, as far as low end bog factors -- what kit where you running, clutching plays a huge role. I would feel pretty confident about most of the T kits this year. (personally I trust every thing but the poo engine) Everything I have seen over the last year that was new with a newer T-kit had great bottom end.

So, we all know your opinion of the engine ( I disagree by the way), but putting that aside, your saying it took a TM8 with a K-Mod skid to do the same things a stock Pro would do? Wow imagine what a T-Pro would do on boost and a aftermarket skid. Oh wait I already know, I happen to own one.

Not really what I was saying, how many times have I said the pro is the most capable stock sled, what I was saying was the kmod made it, not the turbo and kmod, just imagine what the Tpro with a kmod. If I had the money to blow I would have one, but don't have the time and money to worry about the engine. (and don't read that as me mocking the motor I have said plenty of good about this sled so leave it, its my experience and opinion, just mine, not yours)

Just had to make the same decision. Went with the dragon with the turbo. Already has a 174 CE track. I am putting a Kmod rear suspension and Coil over shocks. Rode with it last year, best deep snow sled I have ever seen. Spent a weekend on a pro, I really liked it, but am hoping with a little suspension mod the dragon will be better.

iam not putting the pro down but if you watch schooled agian where they are introduceing the pro "stock" they dont hold a candle to a turbo dragon when chris is on his turbo iq hes in way steeper terrain and still carrys more speed then the pro did on moderate hills. you can just tell how much more power it has

must remember iam not putting the pro down just comparing aples to oranges iam 99.99% sure a turbo pro would walk all over a turbo dragon

I've had both. I ride with both. We have a good mixture of both in the group I ride with. So same day, same snow, same line comparisons. I'm telling you from personal first hand experience that in deep lighter powder there isn't much difference. When the snow is more set up or the powder is heavier, ya the TDragon will out pull the stock Pro but in our group, everyone is migrating to the PRO. One of my buddies still has both. T800Dragon and stock Pro. I think he took his Dragon out 1 time last year, but I am not sure. Every time I went with him, he took the PRO and left the TDragon home.

I have had both and prefer the stock pro. Just something about riding a stock sled and having it capable of doing so much is amazing. I had an 09 td8and loved the power and at the time the chassis until I rode a stock pro. Last year I kept the pro stock waiting for everyone to figure the turbos out on them. This year will be on the best of both worlds, a turbo pro.
