Turbo Diesel sled

the diesal sleds are going to be the primary sleds used in the Artic for research groups stationed up there...miles per gallon and reliability being the issue they want to overcome with the diesal sled...

M8 M&M, I was gonna ask one question...

WHY????

But that totally makes sense. I could see something like this being a very useful tool in a working type situation. Kindof a single track skid steer!!! (ok, without the cab, bucket, or the other track which makes the skid....)

and one other reason aside from the milage and reliability...storage of fuel much longer life with diesal and they do not generally encounter terrian where alot of acceleration and hill climbing power required

true... all very true... BUT what about starting it at -30 after it has sat for a week or so..... and if you think a 4 stroke pulls hard... just think about a 4 stroke diesel

syn oil..oil pan heaters all warmed up with a gen set..glow plug..electric start and decompression...all kinds of tricks i imagine...my Dad put a million miles over his trucking career in the Artic...trucks...cat trains...etc etc...he said in the equipment the critters would head to the armpits and balls for heat and when they would stop in the camps to warm their feet all the critters could be felt heading from the armpits and balls to the new hot spot being the feet..lol..

lol.

I saw a trucker washing his hair and brushing his teath today in the john... never seen that before. I guess it probubly happens alot, just never even thunk it. :flock:

This is the University of Buffalo's Clean Snowmobile part of the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge. I was part of the challenge for five years at a different University and got to see this sled in action for two years. Yes it was slow and heavy but all the guys on there team work hard to make it work. They won the emission event the first year they brought this sled because the emission guys did not bring the right equipment to measure diesel emissions so using the gas equipment they easily won. I think the last year they used this sled it topped out at ~50mph. One of their problems was clutching and gear because of the limited rpms of a diesel.

Not sure of the brand, but one of the videos said it was 40hp and 68ft-lbs of torque. Stellar...........
