Turbo centre section bearing failure

Well I took the sled for a rip today. First one with the turbo installed and it lasted about an hour. I made one pull and after that I could hear a metallic sound coming from the turbo. I pulled the intake off and the compressor wheel was bouncing around and making contact with the housing. So I guess the bearings failed in the centre section. What would cause this? I disconnected the oil line from the top of the housing and started the motor and oil came out of the line right away. So oil wasnt the problem. Coolant hoses were hot so I'm sure it had coolant flow.

The kit was used but there was only around 3000km on it so it seems pretty premature for this to happen. What are some causes that I can look at?
Thanks for any help.

What size tbo? My 2860 only lasted a few thousand km's. Running lean is hard on them too.

well it was supposed to be a 2871 but the part number keeps coming up 2860. Number on the tag is 739548-5001. When I do a search it comes up 2860 everytime. I only ran it just over an hour so I'm stumped. It ran great for the guy I got it from.

The poly bearing cage failed in the bearing cartridge. Its very common on the garrett BB turbos.

Common problems are shutting the sled off after a long pull, this will heak soak the center section and cause the poly cage to get brittle.

BB turbos require very little oil so I highly doubt it was lack of oil.

Also faulty BOV's are hard on the BB turbo as it causes the balls to skid and wear out the inner race of the cartridge.

Check your oil return for some black poly pieces.

Look into getting the center exchanged from a garrett dealer.

the BOV looks new and was working fine. I hear what your saying about the heat soaking bearings and I would imagine it was likely the cause. I will try and pull it apart tomorrow and post what I find. Thanks for the help guys.
