Turbo bogging and dying in reall deep snow?

I hit 1350 on my EGT's in some really deep pow ... I have a 2009 M8 PGT with the intercooler ...

I was running 17 20 40 ...

Was riding at probably 3/4-full throttle through some really deep pow, pow was so deep it was coming over the hood and I couldnt see my EGT's ... keep in mind this was on a road. Not even off-trail. We had a lot of snow.

All of a sudden, boom, sled dies instantly. I'm kinda sitting there stuck in a DEEP hole right now like "oh **** dont tell me this damned thing just seized up".

I waited a few minutes to calm down.

I grabbed the rope and gently pulled it to see if the sled was siezed. It wasn't.

Pulled the rope, started right back up ... checked my high temp, I had hit 1350 and 1339 on my EGT's ...

sled was idling fine. Started digging. ...

turned it around and rode it back to the truck just fine ...

It couldn't have been over 1300 for more than 10 seconds, which I know is a lot, but do you all think I somehow damaged the motor running it that hot?

I guess I'll know for sure tomorrow when I pull the plugs and look at the pistons, but this has me kinda worried...

It seems like every ride I go on, I'm having to screw with my fuel map ... EG, if I go ride at Rabbit Ears the map I use in the lower uinthas is rich, the map I use at RE is too lean for the lower uintahs .... but I'm riding 8300+ feet at both places?

Is that common for a turbo to bog and die like that? Give me some thoughts, thanks.

it will bog and die if the turbo intake cant get a ton of air or the exhaust gets plugged...

intercooler with a fan?

bd kit?...i thought they were "set it and forget it"?...:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-hap

Sounds to me like your mid setting is lean. Try running 20-30-46 for numbers, I put 2000 miles on my 09 BD M8 without a single problem. Hope this helps.

It could be the fuel, I've been trying to use up this race gas I bought and didn't need, so its been running between 5-20% ...

What kind of exhaust? If you plug either your intake or exhaust for any given period of time you can get these results. Over the hood powder would mean hot underhood air and raise your temps. Plugged exhaust would slow the turbo and bog out too.

what was the max boost number? Duty cycle? I ride very close to wher you do and my numbers are different with no intercooler. my mid is 38 and top is 46 to 48. what boost are ya trying to run? You said something about old rac e fuel. How are ya mixing it and what kind do ya have?

I'm not sure, I didn't re-zero the maxes before I rode it the other day, but the EBC was setting itself to 8.4 psi @ 8300 feet.

I think I'm gonna go back to the stock 28 38 48 fuel map and see how it does, maybe I was running too lean.

I just hope I didnt damage anything with that 1350 temp for the ~8 seconds I was probably at that number.

Hey did you look at your plugs. Mine died the same thing and I was detonating and burned down both cylinders. If you got an Eco 21 code it would have killed your sled.

If your gauges were covered you probably did not see the detonation code and it shut down because of detonation.

You need to run 50/50 race gas above 8 lbs of boost on the M8, unless you are above 7000 feet and then your can run 70/30.

1350 degrees is too hot and may have caused some damage.

i have m8 '09 bd pgt and
i am running at 8.5psi of boost on pump gas.
my psi numbers 8 24 48
egt is 1150-1220
afr is 11.6-12

Well, found one potential problem ... The 1/8" poly line going from the intercooler to the boost controller (boost pressure line) had apparently rubbed up against my pipe and had several holes in it.

This apparently resulted in a mild overboost condition, which is probably why I hit that 1350 on my EGT's.

This line also supplies the reference pressure to the fuel pump, which could have been why I was constantly having to dick with my fuel map....

I don't know if this would also cause the sled to idle 600 rpm higher than it normall does like it is right now, but I bought some poly tubing I think will work to replace the stock stuff (doesn't appear to be quite as strong) ... I'll put it on and take it out tomorrow and see how it does.

my m1000 would die after a long pull, changed bd free upgraded wire harness been screamin ever since, no high temps though. 6psi filled up at the gas station
