When you install a new tunnel on a sled how do you transfer the VIN number?....Can you make a engraved tag and rivet it on the side of the tunnel?

now one would think that it would be as straight forward as that, but I am sure its not that easy.....

shawn, go to a trophy shop and get them engrave a plate just bigger then the size of the vin number. double sided tape and your laughing. been there, done it and works great.

An engraved plate is NOT as cheap as a number punch...and it's not as permament either.

Zip cut the original from the old tunnel, drill a hole on each side so it can be riveted to the new tunnel. Round the edge's, hit it with a polish wheel for 2 mins and your done. Zero expense and looks good.

Do any of the above, but if yer changing yer tunnel there's a chance it's going to look pretty nice!!!!!! Put the decal plate under yer seat. If anyone needs to see it pull the seat off for them...........

I've been talking with DMV today about titling a sled that I built and has no title. I'm pretty sure all of the above suggestions are not legal. I was told that if I used the old vin(off the tunnel of the sled the motor came out of) that the cops would have to inspect the sled and I would have to produce a bill of sale for the new tunnel and the title and bill of sale for the old sled. After the inspection you submit a form and they issue the vin tag...then, the cops come back and they give you "special glue" to attach the vin plate and they inspect it all again to make sure its legit when you put the tag on. I was told today that if you just cut the vin off the old tunnel or made your own tag you could be fined for altering the vin. This is just from the Montana DMV and I'm sure every state is different. I would make the phone call and do it right if it were me. Just my .02.

I am the original owner of the sled......so attaching the same serial number to a different tunnel shouldn't be a big deal....nothing has really changed.....
Now if you were building a complete sled from scratch with bits and peices from everywhere, and it never started from a sled that you owned before hand...I guess that would be like a home built trailer and they would have to inspect it and isssue a serial number....

If it was your serial number to begin with....it shouldn't be an issue.

Thats right. Sounds almost exactly what I had to do in Utah with my old sled. I had a cop come over, look at the old tunnel, I had a printed document from the dmv with everything filled out cop verified the old tunnel and vin # signed the document, took that document to the dmv with my title and they verified the paperwork, then sent me a little candy a** tag they expected me to rivot on my sled. This tag was so flimsy, it was about as thin as a piece of tin foil I wasn't about to put that on my sled to have it tear off if the wind caught it so I just carried it around in a little plastic bag in case I was ever hassled. So many freaking jumps to jump through.

You're right, it shouldn't...but, sometimes bureaucracy prevails and you get screwed. I would just contact the DMV and check, it may save tons of grief if you ever want to cross the boarder or trade the sled to a dealer...or it may never be an issue but I would hate to lose a weekend riding b/c my sled registration was jacked up.

It is a federal offense to knowing alter a vin # or change a vin # from one vehicle to another with out doing the dmv paperwork.Being a sled, motorcycle, car boat,ect....!!!!

As big a PITA it is to do the right steps and jump thru the right hoops, do it. It'll save you a huge headache later if the situation ever arises that you need to show the right documents. If you don't have all your ducks in a row the cops or whoever's checking can make your day miserable easily.......I know firsthand;):D

I know the deal in BC
You cannot just apply your old serial to your new tunnel, cuz any thief can legally purchase a destroyed sled, regi it, steal yours and just stamp his VIN on it and your done
Here they actually issue you a new serial number and link it to your engine number, you must apply it to the tunnel in the same location
Do it the other way and a supercop will legally have a right to seize your sled til you can prove it is your's, with no VIN there is no way, only thing you can trace back to you is the engine number which is always linked to the the original VIN
Lot's of guys are sticking their old VIN on a new tunnel but it ain't legit

I know here in Idaho when you change the tunnle on a sled you have to have it inspected and a new ser. # and tag are installed by the DMV inspector. You also have to supply the sales receipts for the tunnle and any other receipts for parts that you have changed at that time.

They do this to make sure the sled has not been stolen and rebuilt. They have the power to decide if your sled will be given the new vin. # or not. If it don't make the cut they can impound it until you can prove the sled is yours.

Also If you have changed your tunnle and not had it inspected and a new vin # given. The inspector can impound it on the spot. We learned this when he dropped by the local mod shop and found a couple of sleds with no vin#.

This inspector was a real A$$, just out looking for anything to ruin your day.

Vin #

Maybe not the most pc thing to do but I would tell the DMV and the man to get bent. A sled has no title just a bill of sale. On stock sleds that i've replaced tunnels I've just punch in the vin in the same place it was on the old tunnel. I was on the mountain with a ground up hillcross sled tunning it. I forgot to get tags for it . When the man rolled up and asked about no vin and no tags. I told him the deal, he gave me a warning. I went to the shop got some tags. On the paper work were it asked vin I put down custom mod. Nothing was ever said. Another time when I went to get tags for my Holz tube chassis at the state parks office. they were kind of perplexed when I told them it was a race sled with no vin. They gave me tags and when I got my paper work back in the mail it had a vin number they wanted me to stamp in the tunnel. Between this time I found a small vin plate on the sled. At any one time I ride there is 1to3 people in our group with replaced or after market tunnels as long as we have our tags we never get hassiled.

Vin

If all this is true then there are a WHOLE LOTTA sleds being used illegally out there... shouldn't the manufacturers of the tunnels be able to shed some light on this? And better yet, what if you want to import one?
