i was watching the Xgames and i saw some of the snowcross racers had a ring around there neck almost like the old school diving suits. what is it and what does it do? just wondering thanks

Nice, they have gotten cheaper.
I have 2. I have a velcro padded version that just wraps around and goes under the helmet. Made by EVS. Very basic but serves a good purpose.
The second is more pricey (Leatt brace). It has a "shelf" on the front and back to keep your head from being whipped. It also has two supports that go down the back of your neck and the front. Kinda a pain to put on when wearing a Tek vest but the alternative means not walking, EVER.
