Tryin to get some more speed and power out of my sled.... any advise?

i have a 1997 polaris super sport 488cc fan cooled. it tops out around 70 and only gets to about 6800 rpms, this summer i put in some new suspension, new plastic skis to replace the steel ones, a new winshield, and a 4 in riser. is there anything i can do to it to make it have some more power and speed? (without spending too much dough) thanks guys :plane:

488

Not sure what the run RPMs should be but 6800 sounds low, I think it should be closer to 78-7900. You are well below the power band. Check your clutching. If you get the RPMs up it will come to life. If you are still not satisfied, I think Aaen made a pipe for them. Not too many did.

what do i check for my clutching? i lubed up the secondary last year and that helped only temporarily, my clutch engages really low too at about 3600-3800 rmps, is that normal? or maybe i need a new clutch spring?

Lubed your secondary? Clutches should be run dry. Also, my book for a 1995 Trail shows operating RPM's at 7000, so your 6800 might be a hair low, but not too bad. You might need a bit firmer spring (new one) or a bit less weight in the primary.

You might look into eliminating your chain tensioner by dropping one tooth on the lower sprocket and taking one link out of the chain. Whatever combinatin you come up with has to fit real snug and have no chain slop. I did it with my 440 xcr and it added 20 mph. But it takes a long icy straight away to get up to 90 mph.

Sounds to me like it is time for some basic clutch maintenance. A good cleaning, new springs and secondary buttons at the very least, plus what ever else is showing any wear. Get it back to a stock baseline and then see how it performs. Make your adjustment from there.

I added a cat primary spring yellow/white and a cat roller to mine, using stock polaris weights, secondary had 49degree helix with yellow/white spring. I deleted the oil injection and ripped all the under hood stuff out and pretty much ditched everything for weight, my launch was 42-4400 and would pull to about 7-7100 and was getting about 80-85mph out of it. I could not get that polaris secondary to work right at all but when i was all done the sled was a sleeper cause it looked like sh*t lol but was fast.
