I'm heading to Colorado Jan 15. Meeting up with some friends in Evergreen. From there we will be going up to Granby then to Rabbit Ears. Looking for any info on typical road conditions and anything as far as grades and certain areas to be careful at. Any advice will be helpful . We will be 5 deep in a superduty and hooked onto a 38' gooseneck enclosed. Thanks for any advice that may help us.

My guess is you'll head up I-70 to highway 40 that takes you up over Berthoud Pass and down into Winter Park...then on into Granby.

Berthoud is a nasty pass with 180 degree switchbacks on a pretty good decline...you'll have to take her slow and steady but it can certainly be done with the rig you'll have. Semi's do go up and over the pass, so you shouldn't have a problem if you drive like you have a brain!

I take that path a lot, and Berthoud can be a tough pass to trailer on if there's any snow at all. As an alternative, you could take 70 all the way to Silverthorne, and then take 9 North from there up to Kremmling, then 40 West until the Ears. Trailering through Eisenhower tunnel over the divide is easier than Berthoud. Mileage will be a bit more for this, but the time on the road will be very similar.

EDIT: oops, I missed the stop in Granby in the OP. You will want to go over Berthoud, through Winter Park, and to Granby from there. Good luck, and avoid ski traffic if you can.

Ski traffic is really the worst part....the roads are rarely too bad to drive on, other than traffic....the CDOT is pretty good about keeping things looking nice, I-70 wise.

When I ride, I try to leave Denver before 5 AM, and I miss it. Anytime between 4PM and 8PM on the east-bound traffic is horrible too....everyone drives their little suv's like formula 1 race cars, bumper to bumper, and the do not seem to realize that a pickup and trailer can't stop like an Audi.

I've never really had a problem over the pass. Just take it slow...that's the key. That area is also pretty avalanche prone, so if they're blasting or cleaning something up, just go back to Empire and have a bite to eat at the cafe. They keep a pretty close eye on it, so I wouldn't really worry about getting caught on the road, but they often close it with little notice, and make you wait for a few hours.

Hopefully we have a ton of snow by then, one thing to note is that if it snows through the night CDOT may set up the cannon and blow the snow slide areas on Berthoud. Typically they start setting up just before 7 am, so get over the pass before that or you may have to sit and wait for them to finish.

Thank you very much for all the great info!! It should be very helpful. I've been into cooke multiple times along with island park and togwotee. This strech of Colorado seems a bit more sketchy. Thanks a bunch!

I work nights, so we usually leave at 2am from Denver, head to GL over Berthoud. Never had any problems on snowpack. Its the other drivers that scare the hell outta me. Its when it looks fine, dry pavement that you'll get bit. I put my truck in the wall goin up on ice, the wife put it in the guardrail same corner goin down. Never hurt it bad enough to care, just broken plastic stuff. Drive like you can't afford new sleds, truck, trailer and you will be fine! Not like those guys in the "Bro-dozers"
