Fix your ground wires, sounds like your trailer is trying to gnd. thru the ball.

I would bet your ground wire is cut somewhere and that is causing it to try to ground through the ball.

Also your existing ground wire to the trailer may be rusted.

See if you can weld a ground wire to the trailer and have it sliced and greased when golted on see to keep out air for rust.

Clean the plug to truck connection?

I had this happen to me once and I was able to clean the connection (mainly the trailer plug) and add some dielectric grease to solve the issue. good luck.
