I have a Triton PR-168 (16 ft enclosed) v-nose trailer. Its a great trailer. I have been using a Mr. Heater Big Buddy. It works well but gives off fumes. Wondering what everyone else is using. Wondering if electric is the way to go? Or are there better propane heaters out there? Any input would be great.

Get and RV furnace, only way to go. You do have to vent the exhaust but way better than any vent free heaters out there. Electric would be good but to get enough heat in there you have to have a HUGE generator. RV furnace runs off a 12 V battery. Not sure on the BTU, get as many BTU as you can afford I'd say. That is my .02

RV furnace X2 we heat a 30 footer no problem.. 25 deg + in there when we get back.. insulated trailer to..

Go RV it will work a lot better then that Big Buddy I had one and was never very happy with it.

I have a RV furnace. Its nice if you have to work on something but I dont leave it on when I am sledding, what would I be keeping warm? When you open the doors the heat is gone. The forced air heats up the trailer in couple minutes. How does everybody keep their batteries charged on trailer if you have heater on all the time.I dont think mine would run long enough to fully melt the snow under my machines and dry the floor.

do any of the trailer mfgs make a kit to just bolt in for those that didnt factory order so that we dont have to upgrade our 4 -8 year old trailers? too lazy to fab a bunch of parts from the camper wreckers

It doesn't take much to add a RV furnace. Literally you could put in a shelf, drill the intake & exhaust holes, mount the furnace, run power, thermostat, and propane to it and you are done. Instead of a 12V deep cycle battery get two 6V golf cart batteries ad wire them in series for power and you'll be able to run a furnace for days. My 40' trailer came with only a 19,000 BTU furnace to heat it so I reducted it to put all of it's heet into the LQ and added a seperate 35,000 BTU furnace to the garage. It will heat the 20' box to over 90* in sub zero weather and doesn't even have to run continuously. It easily melts all the snow/ice of my sleds overnight after a trip.

I did build in a nice box and added a lot of hooks to it for hanging gear to dry as well as ran ducting to spread out the heet and made some nice wood brackets for the ducts. Makes a nice guest bedroom when winter or summer camping.

Thanks for the input. I'd love to see pictures. Any specific brand to look for?

keep are heater running with 6 golf car batteries built into the floor.. also have a honda genset if they start to get low.. truck charges batteries as we drive and plug her in at night.. and when we get back to the trailer we dont open the big doors and let the heat out.. go inside warm up..get changed.. then load sleds just before we leave... load sled first and everythings wet!!!
We got her down to a science.. :beer; :beer; .. gonna have a pretty sick 4 sled trailer for sale soon if anyone is looking?? If you are interested let me know.. ALOT of money into trailer.. going to move to a 34 foot gooseneck..

2 Buddys

Two Big buddys and a 28 gal Motorhome propane tank behind the axle.
Two propane wall mounted lights ( the mantel type)
Have a small fan going to circulate, run from a couple of 12 volts.

Buy a Suburban SF series heeter. Just go to e-bay & search for Suburban RV furnace. A SF-20 is a 20,000 BTU SF-25 is a 25,000, etc. I took some pics before I finished mine but guess I never took any after I completed it.

Here is a pic before furnace:

trailer heaters

We saw a beautiful Mirage Trailer, built in Caldwell, Idaho, that had an RV furnace mounted above, with ducts down the side, below side cabinets. About wet my pants....then I wondered why I didn't think of that when we mounted our heater in the new sled trailer last year. I think the RV furnace is the way to go. Last year we found a large propane catalytic heater from Harbor Freight on the net, fairly inexpensive and mounted it towards the front (mounted it up off the floor and built an aluminum guard around). Also since this trailer is big we mounted the bottle in the trailer as well to keep away from ice and snow, etc.

What worries me if there is a fuel leak with an open flame heater, one could have a fire....we worry about the kids putting gas cans in the trailer and we dont notice, or not notice if there is a leak (sometimes the kids dont put the caps on cans tight) (also carbon monoxide gas) then people and kids get burned and that would be a horrible tradgey.

Also just thought of something.....when propane burns the byproduct is H2O....a trailer full of wet sleds, wet clothes, and more mositure from propane. We had a catalytic heater in one of our camp trailers and the extra moisture in the winter etc...took the finish off the wood cabinets.

We think we will install an RV furnace in our trailer, fabricate cabinets and duct work. Good luck to you.

we use a 18,000 btu vent free heater. it is ultra slim and takes up very little room and heats the trailer very well. it has a thermostat on it and a low oxygen sensor

What brand of heater is it? Or what do you recommend?

Just don't take a nap in the trailer, could be a long one. Not saying that it will happen, just don't like to put too much faith in a heater that doesn't vent outside.

we open the roof vents so that the trailer isn't completely sealed but doesn't let all the warm air out.
