Trail Tech setup on Mountain Horse?

Has anyone tried setting up a Trail Tech or other Speed/Trip/Temp unit on a Mountain Horse. More of a Flat Lander question to know how many miles or your speed.

Havent done it, but have the trail tech on for eng temp and hr meter. So I'm interested if you get it figured out.

TTO temp gage on KX

I have the cheap TTO temp gage for a KX 450.
Last season it would run rich due to low engine temps.
Last season I rode with PalousePoo who shrouded his Yamaha
For this season I shrouded the KX engine.
The KX was more difficult than his reverse head Yamaha but the results should be the same.
The temp gage will show the improvements.

i used a ruber made container and cut and strapped it in everywhere to keep the snow from blasting the block had no problems with heat after that. I also have the rads blocked off with plastic that if need be in the tight stuff I just reach up and pull out and put in front pouch

Very well done ! I like the look of that ! If my CR gets to cold I'm gonna replicate that. I see your in Priest Lake. Is your riding good there ? Do you know Snowbike Boondocker from the youtube vids ?

Sweet KX motoman. Ran an SX kit on that last yr didn't you?

Summitboy, riding isn't very good at Priest Lake, caribou always running in front of you! Its dangerous.

Ya. I had that problem on that 23 mile twisty section up to Priest on the Ducati. I was probably going a little faster LOL

putting the heat issue to bed

did the same on my wr450, skid plate, front engine cover, right side cover make from plastic from truck bed liner, trim fit and heat gun to improve contours. Made a big difference in deep snow. In spring I removed the right side cover for cooling, doing the same now for my new YZ250 sno bike.

KTM thermostat

Do you run a thermostat? Or does the shroud keep temps up high enough with no thermostat?
All my snowbikes have had a thermostat to keep the engine temp
up.
Installing a Boondocker turbo on a friends KTM now. It might be a game changer. We will see how it works in the Priest area. Tight technical riding with a lot of trees might not be conducive for a turbo.
SX kit for now. Change coming end of December.

Thermostat

You should still run thermostat I did this on buddy's kx last year. Prolly the first one to do thermostat and plastic engine shrouds!!

I have the gps version and it is really great to have especially diagnosing an engine issue. But the only way it will record miles without the wheel is through the gps so it is not 100 percent accurate...... Especially in the trees. I find I use the temp gauge all the time and then you can see how your temp ran in comparison to climbs and drops throughout a recorded ride... For me I also got the metal protection part. I have smashed the headlight into a few logs and I know it saved the unit..... The headlight is another story.. So in closing it was more useful than I ever could have imagined.

I run a Trail Tech Vapor on my WR450 in the summer, and I'm switching to the simple TTO Temp Meter for winter. I checked with Trail Tech and found out that the temp sensor, wire lead and connector are the same for the Vapor and the TTO, so the swap out will be extremely simple. They're even selling me the TTO without a sensor (24.95 plus shipping), which for some reason isn't an available purchasing option unless you order directly from them over the phone or by email.

If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have bought a vapor, cause the temp readout is too small to see a lot of the time. I would go with a larger display temp only guage, and a separate hour meter. IMO

I know on my unit with the gps you can set temps for the orange and red lights to go off.... I find this really useful so you are not having to read numbers you know when the specific light goes on you have issues or how bad the issue is..

I never have tried the Vapor in the winter, but that was my exact thought -- the temp display is way too small and would be hard to see, especially when covered with snow and ice. I also wasn't crazy about exposing my $100 vapor to those conditions... a $25 TTO is a lot easier to replace. :face-icon-small-hap
